  1. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 175 to 179

[YOUSAF ALI] Relate to them the story of the man to whom We sent Our signs, but he passed them by: so Satan followed him up, and he went astray.

[ PICKTHAL ] Recite unto them the tale of him to whom We gave Our revelations, but he sloughed them off, so Satan overtook him and he became of those who lead astray.

[ SHAKIR ] And recite to them the narrative of him to whom We give Our communications, but he withdraws himself from them, so the Shaitan overtakes him, so he is of those who go astray.

  2. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 175 to 179

[YOUSAF ALI] If it had been Our will, We should have elevated him with Our signs; but he inclined to the earth, and followed his own vain desires. His similitude is that of a dog: if you attack him, he lolls out his tongue, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls out his tongue. That is the similitude of those who reject Our signs; So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.

[ PICKTHAL ] And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.

[ SHAKIR ] And if We had pleased, We would certainly have exalted him thereby; but he clung to the earth and followed his low desire, so his parable is as the parable of the dog; if you attack him he lolls out his tongue; and if you leave him alone he lolls out his tongue; this is the parable of the people who reject Our communications; therefore relate the narrative that they may reflect.

  3. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 175 to 179

[YOUSAF ALI] Evil as an example are people who reject Our signs and wrong their own souls.

[ PICKTHAL ] Evil as an example are the folk who denied Our revelations, and were wont to wrong themselves.

[ SHAKIR ] Evil is the likeness of the people who reject Our communications and are unjust to their own souls.

  4. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 175 to 179

[YOUSAF ALI] Whom Allah doth guide,- he is on the right path: whom He rejects from His guidance,- such are the persons who perish.

[ PICKTHAL ] He whom Allah leadeth, he indeed is led aright, while he whom Allah sendeth astray - they indeed are losers.

[ SHAKIR ] Whomsoever Allah guides, he is the one who follows the right way; and whomsoever He causes to err, these are the losers.

  5. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 175 to 179

[YOUSAF ALI] Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).

[ PICKTHAL ] Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful.

[ SHAKIR ] And certainly We have created for hell many of the jinn and the men; they have hearts with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear; they are as cattle, nay, they are in worse errors; these are the heedless ones.

  6. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) Ayat: 36

[YOUSAF ALI] But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.

[ PICKTHAL ] Most of them follow not but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.

[ SHAKIR ] And most of them do not follow (anything) but conjecture; surely conjecture will not avail aught against the truth; surely Allah is cognizant of what they do.

  7. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 73 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, the Unbelievers say to those who believe, "Which of the two sides is best in point of position? Which makes the best show in council?"

[ PICKTHAL ] And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Which of the two parties (yours or ours) is better in position, and more imposing as an army?

[ SHAKIR ] And when Our clear communications are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe: Which of the two parties is best in abiding and best in assembly?

  8. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 73 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] But how many (countless) generations before them have we destroyed, who were even better in equipment and in glitter to the eye?

[ PICKTHAL ] How many a generation have We destroyed before them, who were more imposing in respect of gear and outward seeming!

[ SHAKIR ] And how many of the generations have We destroyed before them who were better in respect of goods and outward appearance!

  9. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) Ayat: 46

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

[ SHAKIR ] Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

  10. Sura: 26 - ash-Shu`araa (The Poets) Ayat: 111

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "Shall we believe in thee when it is the meanest that follow thee?"

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: Shall we put faith in thee, when the lowest (of the people) follow thee?

[ SHAKIR ] They said: Shall we believe in you while the meanest follow you?

  11. Sura: 34 - Saba (Sheba) From Ayat: 34 to 35

[YOUSAF ALI] Never did We send a warner to a population, but the wealthy ones among them said: "We believe not in the (Message) with which ye have been sent."

[ PICKTHAL ] And We sent not unto any township a warner, but its pampered ones declared: Lo! we are disbelievers in that wherewith ye have been sent.

[ SHAKIR ] And We never sent a warner to a town but those who led lives in ease in it said: We are surely disbelievers in what you are sent with.

  12. Sura: 34 - Saba (Sheba) From Ayat: 34 to 35

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "We have more in wealth and in sons, and we cannot be punished."

[ PICKTHAL ] And they say: We are more (than you) in wealth and children. We are not the punished!

[ SHAKIR ] And they say: We have more wealth and children, and we shall not be punished.

  13. Sura: 45 - al-Jaathiya (Crouching) Ayat: 23

[YOUSAF ALI] Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition?

[ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou seen him who maketh his desire his god, and Allah sendeth him astray purposely, and sealeth up his hearing and his heart, and setteth on his sight a covering? Then who will lead him after Allah (hath condemned him)? Will ye not then heed?

[ SHAKIR ] Have you then considered him who takes his low desire for his god, and Allah has made him err having knowledge and has set a seal upon his ear and his heart and put a covering upon his eye. Who can then guide him after Allah? Will you not then be mindful?
