The continuity of life

  1. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 30

    (30

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."

[ PICKTHAL ] And when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to place a viceroy in the earth, they said: Wilt thou place therein one who will do harm therein and will shed blood, while we, we hymn Thy praise and sanctify Thee? He said: Surely I know that which ye know not.

[ SHAKIR ] And when your Lord said to the angels, I am going to place in the earth a khalif, they said: What! wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood, and we celebrate Thy praise and extol Thy holiness? He said: Surely I know what you do not know.

  2. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 200

    (200

[YOUSAF ALI] So when ye have accomplished your holy rites, celebrate the praises of Allah, as ye used to celebrate the praises of your fathers,- yea, with far more Heart and soul. There are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us (Thy bounties) in this world!" but they will have no portion in the Hereafter.

[ PICKTHAL ] And when ye have completed your devotions, then remember Allah as ye remember your fathers or with a more lively remembrance. But of mankind is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world," and he hath no portion in the Hereafter.

[ SHAKIR ] So when you have performed your devotions, then laud Allah as you lauded your fathers, rather a greater lauding. But there are some people who say, Our Lord! give us in the world, and they shall have no resting place.

  3. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 201

[YOUSAF ALI] And there are men who say: "Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and defend us from the torment of the Fire!"

[ PICKTHAL ] And of them (also) is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire."

[ SHAKIR ] And there are some among them who say: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire.

  4. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) Ayat: 7

    (7

[YOUSAF ALI] He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture wherein are clear revelations - they are the substance of the Book - and others (which are) allegorical. But those in whose hearts is doubt pursue, forsooth, that which is allegorical seeking (to cause) dissension by seeking to explain it. None knoweth its explanation save Allah. And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of understanding really heed.

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive, they are the basis of the Book, and others are allegorical; then as for those in whose hearts there is perversity they follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation. but none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none do mind except those having understanding.

  5. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 104

[YOUSAF ALI] "Now have come to you, from your Lord, proofs (to open your eyes): if any will see, it will be for (the good of) his own soul; if any will be blind, it will be to his own (harm): I am not (here) to watch over your doings."

[ PICKTHAL ] Proofs have come unto you from your Lord, so whoso seeth, it is for his own good, and whoso is blind is blind to his own hurt. And I am not a keeper over you.

[ SHAKIR ] Indeed there have come to you clear proofs from your Lord; whoever will therefore see, it is for his own soul and whoever will be blind, it shall be against himself and I am not a keeper over you.

  6. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 179

[YOUSAF ALI] Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).

[ PICKTHAL ] Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful.

[ SHAKIR ] And certainly We have created for hell many of the jinn and the men; they have hearts with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear; they are as cattle, nay, they are in worse errors; these are the heedless ones.

  7. Sura: 13 - ar-Ra`ad (The Thunder) Ayat: 28

[YOUSAF ALI] "Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction.

[ PICKTHAL ] Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!

[ SHAKIR ] Those who believe and whose hearts are set at rest by the remembrance of Allah; now surely by Allah's remembrance are the hearts set at rest.

  8. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 10 to 11

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He who sends down rain from the sky: from it ye drink, and out of it (grows) the vegetation on which ye feed your cattle.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who sendeth down water from the sky, whence ye have drink, and whence are trees on which ye send your beasts to pasture.

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who sends down water from the cloud for you; it gives drink, and by it (grow) the trees upon which you pasture.

  9. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 10 to 11

[YOUSAF ALI] With it He produces for you corn, olives, date-palms, grapes and every kind of fruit: verily in this is a sign for those who give thought.

[ PICKTHAL ] Therewith He causeth crops to grow for you, and the olive and the date-palm and grapes and all kinds of fruit. Lo! herein is indeed a portent for people who reflect.

[ SHAKIR ] He causes to grow for you thereby herbage, and the olives, and the palm trees, and the grapes, and of all the fruits; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.

  10. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) Ayat: 12

[YOUSAF ALI] He has made subject to you the Night and the Day; the sun and the moon; and the stars are in subjection by His Command: verily in this are Signs for men who are wise.

[ PICKTHAL ] And He hath constrained the night and the day and the sun and the moon to be of service unto you, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Lo! herein indeed are portents for people who have sense.

    [ SHAKIR ] And He has made subservient for you the night and the day and the sun and the moon, and the stars are made subservient by His commandment; most surely there are signs in this for a people who ponder;

  11. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 14 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful.

[ PICKTHAL ] And He it is Who hath constrained the sea to be of service that ye eat fresh meat from thence, and bring forth from thence ornaments which ye wear. And thou seest the ships ploughing it that ye (mankind) may seek of His bounty and that haply ye may give thanks.

[ SHAKIR ] And He it is Who has made the sea subservient that you may eat fresh flesh from it and bring forth from it ornaments which you wear, and you see the ships cleaving through it, and that you might seek of His bounty and that you may give thanks.

  12. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 14 to 16

    [YOUSAF ALI] And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and rivers and roads; that ye may guide yourselves;

[ PICKTHAL ] And He hath cast into the earth firm hills that it quake not with you, and streams and roads that ye may find a way.

[ SHAKIR ] And He has cast great mountains in the earth lest it might be convulsed with you, and rivers and roads that you may go aright,

  13. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 14 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] And marks and sign-posts; and by the stars (men) guide themselves.

[ PICKTHAL ] And landmarks (too), and by the star they find a way.

[ SHAKIR ] And landmarks; and by the stars they find the right way.

  14. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) Ayat: 46

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

[ SHAKIR ] Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

  15. Sura: 29 - al-`Ankaboot (The Spider) Ayat: 69

[YOUSAF ALI] And those who strive in Our (cause),- We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right.

[ PICKTHAL ] As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good.

[ SHAKIR ] And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways; and Allah is most surely with the doers of good.

  16. Sura: 30 - ar-Room (The Romans) Ayat: 7

[YOUSAF ALI] They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless.

[ PICKTHAL ] They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter.

[ SHAKIR ] They know the outward of this world's life, but of the hereafter they are absolutely heedless.

  17. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 13 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] He merges Night into Day, and he merges Day into Night, and he has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law): each one runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord: to Him belongs all Dominion. And those whom ye invoke besides Him have not the least power.

[ PICKTHAL ] He maketh the night to pass into the day and He maketh the day to pass into the night. He hath subdued the sun and moon to service. Each runneth unto an appointed term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the Sovereignty; and those unto whom ye pray instead of Him own not so much as the white spot on a date-stone.

[ SHAKIR ] He causes the night to enter in upon the day, and He causes the day to enter in upon the night, and He has made subservient (to you) the sun and the moon; each one follows its course to an appointed time; this is Allah, your Lord, His is the kingdom; and those whom you call upon besides Him do not control a straw.

  18. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 13 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] If ye invoke them, they will not listen to your call, and if they were to listen, they cannot answer your (prayer). On the Day of Judgment they will reject your "Partnership". and none, (O man!) can tell thee (the Truth) like the One Who is acquainted with all things.

[ PICKTHAL ] If ye pray unto them they hear not your prayer, and if they heard they could not grant it you. On the Day of Resurrection they will disown association with you. None can inform you like Him Who is Aware.

[ SHAKIR ] If you call on them they shall not hear your call, and even if they could hear they shall not answer you; and on the resurrection day they will deny your associating them (with Allah); and none can inform you like the One Who is Aware.

  19. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 13 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] O ye men! It is ye that have need of Allah: but Allah is the One Free of all wants, worthy of all praise.

[ PICKTHAL ] O mankind! Ye are the poor in your relation to Allah. And Allah! He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.

[ SHAKIR ] O men! you are they who stand in need of Allah, and Allah is He Who is the Self-sufficient, the Praised One.

  20. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 13 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] If He so pleased, He could blot you out and bring in a New Creation.

[ PICKTHAL ] If He will, He can be rid of you and bring (instead of you) some new creation.

[ SHAKIR ] If He please, He will take you off and bring a new generation.

  21. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) Ayat: 19

    [YOUSAF ALI] The blind and the seeing are not alike;

    [ PICKTHAL ] The blind man is not equal with the seer;

[ SHAKIR ] And the blind and the seeing are not alike

  22. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 27 to 28

[YOUSAF ALI] Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky? With it We then bring out produce of various colours. And in the mountains are tracts white and red, of various shades of colour, and black intense in hue.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou not seen that Allah causeth water to fall from the sky, and We produce therewith fruit of divers hues; and among the hills are streaks white and red, of divers hues, and (others) raven-black;

[ SHAKIR ] Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the cloud, then We bring forth therewith fruits of various colors; and in the mountains are streaks, white and red, of various hues and (others) intensely black?

  23. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) From Ayat: 27 to 28

[YOUSAF ALI] And so amongst men and crawling creatures and cattle, are they of various colours. Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for Allah is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.

[ PICKTHAL ] And of men and beasts and cattle, in like manner, divers hues? The erudite among His bondmen fear Allah alone. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.

[ SHAKIR ] And of men and beasts and cattle are various species of it likewise; those of His servants only who are possessed of knowledge fear Allah; surely Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.

  24. Sura: 39 - az-Zumar (The Groups) Ayat: 9

[YOUSAF ALI] Is one who worships devoutly during the hour of the night prostrating himself or standing (in adoration), who takes heed of the Hereafter, and who places his hope in the Mercy of his Lord - (like one who does not)? Say: "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is he who payeth adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)? Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Are those who know equal with those who know not? But only men of understanding will pay heed.

[ SHAKIR ] What! he who is obedient during hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, takes care of the hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord! Say: Are those who know and those who do not know alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful.

  25. Sura: 39 - az-Zumar (The Groups) Ayat: 21

[YOUSAF ALI] Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth? Then He causes to grow, therewith, produce of various colours: then it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then He makes it dry up and crumble away. Truly, in this, is a Message of remembrance to men of understanding.

[ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou not seen how Allah hath sent down water from the sky and hath caused it to penetrate the earth as watersprings, and afterward thereby produceth crops of divers hues; and afterward they wither and thou seest them turn yellow; then He maketh them chaff. Lo! herein verily is a reminder for men of understanding.

[ SHAKIR ] Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the cloud, then makes it go along in the earth in springs, then brings forth therewith herbage of various colors, then it withers so that you see it becoming yellow, then He makes it a thing crushed and broken into pieces? Most surely there is a reminder in this for the men of understanding.

  26. Sura: 40 - al-Ghaafir (The Forgiver) Ayat: 58

[YOUSAF ALI] Not equal are the blind and those who (clearly) see: Nor are (equal) those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and those who do evil. Little do ye learn by admonition!

[ PICKTHAL ] And the blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil-doer. Little do ye reflect!

[ SHAKIR ] And the blind and the seeing are not alike, nor those who believe and do good and the evil-doer; little is it that you are mindful.

  27. Sura: 55 - ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) Ayat: 33

[YOUSAF ALI] O ye assembly of Jinns and men! If it be ye can pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, pass ye! not without authority shall ye be able to pass!

[ PICKTHAL ] O company of jinn and men, if ye have power to penetrate (all) regions of the heavens and the earth, then penetrate (them)! Ye will never penetrate them save with (Our) sanction.

[ SHAKIR ] O assembly of the jinn and the men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with authority.

  28. Sura: 57 - al-Hadid (The Iron) Ayat: 3

[YOUSAF ALI] He is the First and the Last, the Evident and the Immanent: and He has full knowledge of all things.

[ PICKTHAL ] He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things.

[ SHAKIR ] He is the First and the Last and the Ascendant (over all) and the Knower of hidden things, and He is Cognizant of all things.

  29. Sura: 67 - al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) From Ayat: 3 to 4

[YOUSAF ALI] He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?

[ PICKTHAL ] Who hath created seven heavens in harmony. Thou (Muhammad) canst see no fault in the Beneficent One's creation; then look again: Canst thou see any rifts?

[ SHAKIR ] Who created the seven heavens one above another; you see no incongruity in the creation of the Beneficent Allah; then look again, can you see any disorder?

  30. Sura: 67 - al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) From Ayat: 3 to 4

[YOUSAF ALI] Again turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out.

[ PICKTHAL ] Then look again and yet again, thy sight will return unto thee weakened and made dim.

[ SHAKIR ] Then turn back the eye again and again; your look shall '~ come back to you confused while it is fatigued.
