    (168

[YOUSAF ALI] O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, Lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the evil one, for he is to you an avowed enemy.

[ PICKTHAL ] O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and wholesome in the earth, and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.

[ SHAKIR ] O men! eat the lawful and good things out of what is in the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of the Shaitan; surely he is your open enemy.

  2. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) From Ayat: 168 to 169

    (169

[YOUSAF ALI] For he commands you what is evil and shameful, and that ye should say of Allah that of which ye have no knowledge.

[ PICKTHAL ] He enjoineth upon you only the evil and the foul, and that ye should tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.

[ SHAKIR ] He only enjoins you evil and indecency, and that you may speak against Allah what you do not know.

  3. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 104 to 110

    (104

[YOUSAF ALI] Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity.

[ PICKTHAL ] And there may spring from you a nation who invite to goodness, and enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency. Such are they who are successful.

[ SHAKIR ] And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these it is that shall be successful.

  4. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 104 to 110

    (105

[YOUSAF ALI] Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty,-

[ PICKTHAL ] And be ye not as those who separated and disputed after the clear proofs had come unto them. For such there is an awful doom,

[ SHAKIR ] And be not like those who became divided and disagreed after clear arguments had come to them, and these it is that shall have a grievous chastisement.

  5. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 104 to 110

[YOUSAF ALI] On the Day when some faces will be (lit up with) white, and some faces will be (in the gloom of) black: To those whose faces will be black, (will be said): "Did ye reject Faith after accepting it? Taste then the penalty for rejecting Faith."

[ PICKTHAL ] On the Day when (some) faces will be whitened and (some) faces will be blackened; and as for those whose faces have been blackened, it will be said unto them: Disbelieved ye after your (profession of) belief? Then taste the punishment for that ye disbelieved.

[ SHAKIR ] On the day when (some) faces shall turn white and (some) faces shall turn black; then as to those whose faces turn black: Did you disbelieve after your believing? Taste therefore the chastisement because you disbelieved.

  6. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 104 to 110

[YOUSAF ALI] But those whose faces will be (lit with) white,- they will be in (the light of) Allah's mercy: therein to dwell (for ever).

[ PICKTHAL ] And as for those whose faces have been whitened, in the mercy of Allah they dwell for ever.

[ SHAKIR ] And as to those whose faces turn white, they shall be in Allah's mercy; in it they shall-abide.

[YOUSAF ALI] These are the Signs of Allah: We rehearse them to thee in Truth: And Allah means no injustice to any of His creatures.

[ PICKTHAL ] These are revelations of Allah. We recite them unto thee in truth. Allah willeth no injustice to (His) creatures.

[ SHAKIR ] These are the communications of Allah which We recite to you with truth, and Allah does not desire any injustice to the creatures.

[YOUSAF ALI] To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: To Him do all questions go back (for decision).

[ PICKTHAL ] Unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth; and unto Allah all things are returned.

[ SHAKIR ] And whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is Allah's; and to Allah all things return

  9. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 104 to 110

[YOUSAF ALI] Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors.

[ PICKTHAL ] Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency; and ye believe in Allah. And if the People of the Scripture had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers.

[ SHAKIR ] You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors.

  10. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 151

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "Come, I will rehearse what Allah hath (really) prohibited you from": Join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want;- We provide sustenance for you and for them;- come not nigh to shameful deeds. Whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: That ye ascribe no thing as partner unto Him and that ye do good to parents, and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them - and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed. And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: Come I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you-- (remember) that you do not associate anything with Him and show kindness to your parents, and do not slay your children for (fear of) poverty-- We provide for you and for them-- and do not draw nigh to indecencies, those of them which are apparent and those which are concealed, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand.

  11. Sura: 9 - at-Tawba (The Repentance) Ayat: 71

[YOUSAF ALI] The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.

[ PICKTHAL ] And the believers, men and women, are protecting friends one of another; they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship and they pay the poor-due, and they obey Allah and His messenger. As for these, Allah will have mercy on them. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.

[ SHAKIR ] And (as for) the believing men and the believing women, they are guardians of each other; they enjoin good and forbid evil and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger; (as for) these, Allah will show mercy to them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.

  12. Sura: 9 - at-Tawba (The Repentance) Ayat: 112

[YOUSAF ALI] Those that turn (to Allah) in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah,: that bow down and prostrate themselves in prayer; that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limit set by Allah;- (These do rejoice). So proclaim the glad tidings to the Believers.

[ PICKTHAL ] (Triumphant) are those who turn repentant (to Allah), those who serve (Him), those who praise (Him), those who fast, those who bow down, those who fall prostrate (in worship), those who enjoin the right and who forbid the wrong and those who keep the limits (ordained) of Allah - And give glad tidings to believers!

[ SHAKIR ] They who turn (to Allah), who serve (Him), who praise (Him), who fast, who bow down, who prostrate themselves, who enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and who keep the limits of Allah; and give good news to the believers.

  13. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) Ayat: 90

[YOUSAF ALI] Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition.

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbiddeth lewdness and abomination and wickedness. He exhorteth you in order that ye may take heed.

[ SHAKIR ] Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful.

[YOUSAF ALI] (They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs.

[ PICKTHAL ] Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who, should We establish them in the land, will keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and enjoin good and forbid evil; and Allah's is the end of affairs.

[YOUSAF ALI] Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,

[YOUSAF ALI] And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.

[ PICKTHAL ] And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed.

[ SHAKIR ] And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.

  23. Sura: 24 - an-Noor (The Light) Ayat: 32

[YOUSAF ALI] Marry those among you who are single, or the virtuous ones among yourselves, male or female: if they are in poverty, Allah will give them means out of His grace: for Allah encompasseth all, and he knoweth all things.

[ PICKTHAL ] And marry such of you as are solitary and the pious of your slaves and maid-servants. If they be poor, Allah will enrich them of His bounty. Allah is of ample means, Aware.

[ SHAKIR ] And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male slaves and your female slaves; if they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.

  24. Sura: 33 - al-Ahzaab (The Clans) From Ayat: 32 to 33

[YOUSAF ALI] O Consorts of the Prophet! Ye are not like any of the (other) women: if ye do fear (Allah), be not too complacent of speech, lest one in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire: but speak ye a speech (that is) just.

[ PICKTHAL ] O ye wives of the Prophet! Ye are not like any other women. If ye keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft of speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease aspire (to you), but utter customary speech.

[ SHAKIR ] O wives of the Prophet! you are not like any other of the women; If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word.

  25. Sura: 33 - al-Ahzaab (The Clans) From Ayat: 32 to 33

    (33

[YOUSAF ALI] And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.

[ PICKTHAL ] And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing.

[ SHAKIR ] And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the ignorance of yore; and keep up prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.

[YOUSAF ALI] O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right:

    [ PICKTHAL ] O ye who believe! Guard your duty to Allah, and speak words straight to the point;

[ SHAKIR ] O you who believe! be careful of(your duty to) Allah and speak the right word,
