  1. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 24

[YOUSAF ALI] But if ye cannot- and of a surety ye cannot- then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith.

[ PICKTHAL ] And if ye do it not - and ye can never do it - then guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is of men and stones.

[ SHAKIR ] But if you do (it) not and never shall you do (it), then be on your guard against the fire of which men and stones are the fuel; it is prepared for the unbelievers.

  2. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 31

[YOUSAF ALI] And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: "Tell me the names of these if ye are right."

[ PICKTHAL ] And He taught Adam all the names, then showed them to the angels, saying: Inform Me of the names of these, if ye are truthful.

[ SHAKIR ] And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels; then He said: Tell me the names of those if you are right.

  3. Sura: 4 - an-Nisaa' (The Women) Ayat: 83

[YOUSAF ALI] When there comes to them some matter touching (Public) safety or fear, they divulge it. If they had only referred it to the Messenger, or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have Tested it from them (direct). Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have fallen into the clutches of Satan.

[ PICKTHAL ] And if any tidings, whether of safety or fear, come unto them, they noise it abroad, whereas if they had referred it to the messenger and to such of them as are in authority, those among them who are able to think out the matter would have known it. If it had not been for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy ye would have followed Satan, save a few (of you).

[ SHAKIR ] And when there comes to them news of security or fear they spread it abroad; and if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those among them who can search out the knowledge of it would have known it, and were it not for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have certainly followed the Shaitan save a few

  4. Sura: 9 - at-Tawba (The Repentance) Ayat: 122

[YOUSAF ALI] Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).

[ PICKTHAL ] And the believers should not all go out to fight. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.

[ SHAKIR ] And it does not beseem the believers that they should go forth all together; why should not then a company from every party from among them go forth that they may apply themselves to obtain understanding in religion, and that they may warn their people when they come back to them that they may be cautious?

  5. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) Ayat: 43

[YOUSAF ALI] And before thee also the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: if ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.

[ PICKTHAL ] And We sent not (as Our messengers) before thee other than men whom We inspired - Ask the followers of the Remembrance if ye know not! -

[ SHAKIR ] And We did not send before you any but men to whom We sent revelation-- so ask the followers of the Reminder if you do not know--

  7. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 65

[YOUSAF ALI] So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught knowledge from Our own Presence.

[ PICKTHAL ] Then found they one of Our slaves, unto whom We had given mercy from Us, and had taught him knowledge from Our presence.

[ SHAKIR ] Then they found one from among Our servants whom We had granted mercy from Us and whom We had taught knowledge from Ourselves.

  8. Sura: 20 - Taa-haa (Taa-haa) Ayat: 114

[YOUSAF ALI] High above all is Allah, the King, the Truth! Be not in haste with the Qur'an before its revelation to thee is completed, but say, "O my Lord! advance me in knowledge."

[ PICKTHAL ] Then exalted be Allah, the True King! And hasten not (O Muhammad) with the Qur'an ere its revelation hath been perfected unto thee, and say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.

[ SHAKIR ] Supremely exalted is therefore Allah, the King, the Truth, and do not make haste with the Quran before its revelation is made complete to you and say: O my Lord ! increase me in knowledge.

  9. Sura: 29 - al-`Ankaboot (The Spider) Ayat: 43

[YOUSAF ALI] And such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.

[ PICKTHAL ] As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise.

[ SHAKIR ] And (as for) these examples, We set them forth for men, and none understand them but the learned.

  10. Sura: 39 - az-Zumar (The Groups) Ayat: 9

[YOUSAF ALI] Is one who worships devoutly during the hour of the night prostrating himself or standing (in adoration), who takes heed of the Hereafter, and who places his hope in the Mercy of his Lord - (like one who does not)? Say: "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is he who payeth adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)? Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Are those who know equal with those who know not? But only men of understanding will pay heed.

[ SHAKIR ] What! he who is obedient during hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, takes care of the hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord! Say: Are those who know and those who do not know alike? Only the men of understanding are mindful.

  11. Sura: 41 - Fussilat (Explained in detail) Ayat: 53

[YOUSAF ALI] Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?

[ PICKTHAL ] We shall show them Our portents on the horizons and within themselves until it will be manifest unto them that it is the Truth. Doth not thy Lord suffice, since He is Witness over all things?

[ SHAKIR ] We will soon show them Our signs in the Universe and in their own souls, until it will become quite clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord that He is a witness over all things?

  12. Sura: 55 - ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) From Ayat: 2 to 4

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who has taught the Qur'an.

[ PICKTHAL ] Hath made known the Qur'an.

[ SHAKIR ] Taught the Quran.

  13. Sura: 55 - ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) From Ayat: 2 to 4

[YOUSAF ALI] He has created man:

[ PICKTHAL ] He hath created man.

[ SHAKIR ] He created man,

  14. Sura: 55 - ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) From Ayat: 2 to 4

[YOUSAF ALI] He has taught him speech (and intelligence).

[ PICKTHAL ] He hath taught him utterance.

[ SHAKIR ] Taught him the mode of expression.

  15. Sura: 57 - al-Hadid (The Iron) Ayat: 25

[YOUSAF ALI] We sent aforetime our messengers with Clear Signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down Iron, in which is (material for) mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, Unseen, Him and His messengers: For Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might (and able to enforce His Will).

[ PICKTHAL ] We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.

[ SHAKIR ] Certainly We sent Our messengers with clear arguments, and sent down with them the Book and the balance that men may conduct themselves with equity; and We have made the iron, wherein is great violence and advantages to men, and that Allah may know who helps Him and His messengers in the secret; surely Allah is Strong, Mighty.

  16. Sura: 62 - al-Jumu`a (Friday) Ayat: 2

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who has sent amongst the Unlettered a messenger from among themselves, to rehearse to them His Signs, to sanctify them, and to instruct them in Scripture and Wisdom,- although they had been, before, in manifest error;-

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who hath sent among the unlettered ones a messenger of their own, to recite unto them His revelations and to make them grow, and to teach them the Scripture and wisdom, though heretofore they were indeed in error manifest,

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who raised among the inhabitants of Mecca an Messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His communications and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and the Wisdom, although they were before certainly in clear error,

  17. Sura: 96 - al-`Alaq (The Clot) From Ayat: 1 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

[ PICKTHAL ] Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,

[ SHAKIR ] Read in the name of your Lord Who created.

[YOUSAF ALI] Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

[ PICKTHAL ] Createth man from a clot.

[ SHAKIR ] He created man from a clot.

  19. Sura: 96 - al-`Alaq (The Clot) From Ayat: 1 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-

[ PICKTHAL ] Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,

[ SHAKIR ] Read and your Lord is Most Honorable,

  20. Sura: 96 - al-`Alaq (The Clot) From Ayat: 1 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

[ PICKTHAL ] Who teacheth by the pen,

[ SHAKIR ] Who taught (to write) with the pen

  21. Sura: 96 - al-`Alaq (The Clot) From Ayat: 1 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] Taught man that which he knew not.

[ PICKTHAL ] Teacheth man that which he knew not.

[ SHAKIR ] Taught man what he knew not.
