Justice and benevolence


  1. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 83

    وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِنْكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ مُعْرِضُونَ (83

    اس وقت کو یاد کرو جب ہم نے بنی اسرائیل سے عہد لیا کہ خبردار خدا کے علاوہ کسی کی عبادت نہ کرنا اور ماں باپ ، قرابتداروں ، یتیموں اور مسکینوں کے ساتھ اچھا برتاؤ کرنا. لوگوں سے اچھی باتیں کرنا ، نماز قائم کرنا ، زکوٰۃ ادا کرنا لیکن اس کے بعد تم میں سے چند کے علاوہ سب منحرف ہو گئے اور تم لوگ تو بس اعراض کرنے والے ہی ہو

    [YOUSAF ALI] And remember We took a covenant from the Children of Israel (to this effect): Worship none but Allah; treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the people; be steadfast in prayer; and practise regular charity. Then did ye turn back, except a few among you, and ye backslide (even now).

    [ PICKTHAL ] And (remember) when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, (saying): Worship none save Allah (only), and be good to parents and to kindred and to orphans and the needy, and speak kindly to mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor-due. Then, after that, ye slid back, save a few of you, being averse.

    [ SHAKIR ] And when We made a covenant with the children of Israel: You shall not serve any but Allah and (you shall do) good to (your) parents, and to the near of kin and to the orphans and the needy, and you shall speak to men good words and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate. Then you turned back except a few of you and (now too) you turn aside.


  2. Sura: 4 - an-Nisaa' (The Women) Ayat: 3

    (3

    اور اگر یتیموں کے بارے میں انصاف نہ کرسکنے کا خطرہ ہے تو جو عورتیں تمہیں پسند ہیں دو. تین. چار ان سے نکاح کرلو اور اگر ان میں بھی انصاف نہ کرسکنے کا خطرہ ہے تو صرف ایک۔ یا جو کنیزیں تمہارے ہاتھ کی ملکیت ہیں, یہ بات انصاف سے تجاوز نہ کرنے سے قریب تر ہے

    [YOUSAF ALI] If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

    [ PICKTHAL ] And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice.

    [ SHAKIR ] And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course.


  3. Sura: 4 - an-Nisaa' (The Women) Ayat: 36

    اور اللہ کی عبادت کرو اور کسی شے کو اس کا شریک نہ بناؤ اور والدین کے ساتھ نیک برتاؤ کرو اور قرابتداروں کے ساتھ اور یتیموں, مسکینوں, قریب کے ہمسایہ, دور کے ہمسایہ, پہلو نشین, مسافر غربت زدہ, غلام و کنیز سب کے ساتھ نیک برتاؤ کرو کہ اللہ مغرور اور متکبّر لوگوں کو پسند نہیں کرتا

    [YOUSAF ALI] Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious;-

    [ PICKTHAL ] And serve Allah. Ascribe no thing as partner unto Him. (Show) kindness unto parents, and unto near kindred, and orphans, and the needy, and unto the neighbour who is of kin (unto you) and the neighbour who is not of kin, and the fellow-traveller and the wayfarer and (the slaves) whom your right hands possess. Lo! Allah loveth not such as are proud and boastful,

    [ SHAKIR ] And serve Allah and do not associate any thing with Him and be good to the parents and to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the neighbor of (your) kin and the alien neighbor, and the companion in a journey and the wayfarer and those whom your right hands possess; surely Allah does not love him who is proud, boastful;


  4. Sura: 4 - an-Nisaa' (The Women) Ayat: 58

    ۞ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُمْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَنْ تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُمْ بِهِ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا (58

    بیشک اللہ تمہیں حکم دیتا ہے کہ امانتوں کو ان کے اہل تک پہنچا دو اور جب کوئی فیصلہ کرو تو انصاف کے ساتھ کرو اللہ تمہیں بہترین نصیحت کرتا ہے بیشک اللہ سمیع بھی ہے اور بصیر بھی

    [YOUSAF ALI] Allah doth command you to render back your Trusts to those to whom they are due; And when ye judge between man and man, that ye judge with justice: Verily how excellent is the teaching which He giveth you! For Allah is He Who heareth and seeth all things.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye restore deposits to their owners, and, if ye judge between mankind, that ye judge justly. Lo! comely is this which Allah admonisheth you. Lo! Allah is ever Hearer, Seer.

    [ SHAKIR ] Surely Allah commands you to make over trusts to their owners and that when you judge between people you judge with justice; surely Allah admonishes you with what is excellent; surely Allah is Seeing, Hearing.


  5. Sura: 5 - al-Maaida (The Table) Ayat: 9

    (9

    اللہ نے صاحبان ایمان اور عمل صالح والوں سے وعدہ کیا ہے کہ ان کے لئے مغفرت اور اجرِ عظیم ہے

    [YOUSAF ALI] To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Allah hath promised those who believe and do good works: Theirs will be forgiveness and immense reward.

    [ SHAKIR ] Allah has promised to those who believe and do good deeds (that) they shall have forgiveness and a mighty reward.


  6. Sura: 5 - al-Maaida (The Table) Ayat: 42

    سَمَّاعُونَ لِلْكَذِبِ أَكَّالُونَ لِلسُّحْتِ ۚ فَإِنْ جَاءُوكَ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ أَوْ أَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ ۖ وَإِنْ تُعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ فَلَنْ يَضُرُّوكَ شَيْئًا ۖ وَإِنْ حَكَمْتَ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ (42

    یہ جھوٹ کے سننے والے اور حرام کے کھانے والے ہیں لہذا اگر آپ کے پاس مقدمہ لے کر آئیں تو آپ کو اختیار ہے کہ فیصلہ کردیں یا اعراض کرلیں کہ اگر اعراض بھی کرلیں گے تو یہ آپ کو کوئی نقصان نہ پہنچا سکیں گے لیکن اگر فیصلہ ہی کریں تو انصاف کے ساتھ کریں کہ خدا انصاف کرنے والوں کو دوست رکھتا ہے

    [YOUSAF ALI] (They are fond of) listening to falsehood, of devouring anything forbidden. If they do come to thee, either judge between them, or decline to interfere. If thou decline, they cannot hurt thee in the least. If thou judge, judge in equity between them. For Allah loveth those who judge in equity.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Listeners for the sake of falsehood! Greedy for illicit gain! If then they have recourse unto thee (Muhammad) judge between them or disclaim jurisdiction. If thou disclaimest jurisdiction, then they cannot harm thee at all. But if thou judgest, judge between them with equity. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable.

    [ SHAKIR ] (They are) listeners of a lie, devourers of what is forbidden; therefore if they come to you, judge between them or turn aside from them, and if you turn aside from them, they shall not harm you in any way; and if you judge, judge between them with equity; surely Allah loves those who judge equitably.


  7. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 152

    وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ حَتَّىٰ يَبْلُغَ أَشُدَّهُ ۖ وَأَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ ۖ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۖ وَإِذَا قُلْتُمْ فَاعْدِلُوا وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَىٰ ۖ وَبِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ أَوْفُوا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ وَصَّاكُمْ بِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ (152

    اور خبردار مال هیتیم کے قریب بھی نہ جانا مگر اس طریقہ سے جو بہترین طریقہ ہو یہاں تک کہ وہ توانائی کی عمر تک پہنچ جائیں اور ناپ تول میں انصاف سے پورا پورا دینا -ہم کسی نفس کو اس کی وسعت سے زیادہ تکلیف نہیں دیتے ہیں اور جب بات کرو تو انصاف کے ساتھ چاہے اپنی اقرباہی کے خلاف کیوں نہ ہو اور عہد خدا کو پورا کرو کہ اس کی پروردگار نے تمہیں وصیت کی ہے کہ شاید تم عبرت حاصل کرسکو

    [YOUSAF ALI] And come not nigh to the orphan's property, except to improve it, until he attain the age of full strength; give measure and weight with (full) justice;- no burden do We place on any soul, but that which it can bear;- whenever ye speak, speak justly, even if a near relative is concerned; and fulfil the covenant of Allah: thus doth He command you, that ye may remember.

    [ PICKTHAL ] And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman; and fulfil the covenant of Allah. This He commandeth you that haply ye may remember.

    [ SHAKIR ] And do not approach the property of the orphan except in the best manner until he attains his maturity, and give full measure and weight with justice-- We do not impose on any soul a duty except to the extent of its ability; and when you speak, then be just though it be (against) a relative, and fulfill Allah's covenant; this He has enjoined you with that you may be mindful;


  8. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) Ayat: 90

    ۞ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ (90

    "بیشک اللہ عدل ,احسان اور قرابت داروں کے حقوق کی ادائیگی کا حکم دیتا ہے اور بدکاری ,ناشائستہ حرکات اور ظلم سے منع کرتا ہے کہ شاید تم اسی طرح نصیحت حاصل کرلو"

    [YOUSAF ALI] Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Lo! Allah enjoineth justice and kindness, and giving to kinsfolk, and forbiddeth lewdness and abomination and wickedness. He exhorteth you in order that ye may take heed.

    [ SHAKIR ] Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful.


  9. Sura: 42 - ash-Shura (Consultation) Ayat: 15

    فَلِذَٰلِكَ فَادْعُ ۖ وَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۖ وَقُلْ آمَنْتُ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ كِتَابٍ ۖ وَأُمِرْتُ لِأَعْدِلَ بَيْنَكُمُ ۖ اللَّهُ رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكُمْ ۖ لَنَا أَعْمَالُنَا وَلَكُمْ أَعْمَالُكُمْ ۖ لَا حُجَّةَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ ۖ اللَّهُ يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَنَا ۖ وَإِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيرُ (15

    لہٰذا آپ اسی کے لئے دعوت دیں اور اس طرح استقامت سے کام لیں جس طرح آپ کو حکم دیا گیا ہے اور ا ن کی خواہشات کا اتباع نہ کریں اور یہ کہیں کہ میرا ایمان اس کتاب پر ہے جو خدا نے نازل کی ہے اور مجھے حکم دیا گیا ہے کہ تمہارے درمیان انصاف کروں اللہ ہمارا اور تمہارا دونوں کا پروردگار ہے ہمارے اعمال ہمارے لئے ہیں اور تمہارے اعمال تمہارے لئے - ہمارے اور تمہارے درمیان کوئی بحث نہیں ہے اللہ ہم سب کو ایک دن جمع کرے گا اور اسی کی طرف سب کی بازگشت ہے

    [YOUSAF ALI] Now then, for that (reason), call (them to the Faith), and stand steadfast as thou art commanded, nor follow thou their vain desires; but say: "I believe in the Book which Allah has sent down; and I am commanded to judge justly between you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord: for us (is the responsibility for) our deeds, and for you for your deeds. There is no contention between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and to Him is (our) Final Goal.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Unto this, then, summon (O Muhammad). And be thou upright as thou art commanded, and follow not their lusts, but say: I believe in whatever scripture Allah hath sent down, and I am commanded to be just among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. Unto us our works and unto you your works; no argument between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and unto Him is the journeying.

    [ SHAKIR ] To this then go on inviting, and go on steadfastly on the right way as you are commanded, and do not follow their low desires, and say: I believe in what Allah has revealed of the Book, and I am commanded to do justice between you: Allah is our Lord and your Lord; we shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds; no plea need there be (now) between us and you: Allah will gather us together, and to Him is the return.


  10. Sura: 48 - al-Fath (The Victory) Ayat: 29

    مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَاهُمْ رُكَّعًا سُجَّدًا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانًا ۖ سِيمَاهُمْ فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ مِنْ أَثَرِ السُّجُودِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ ۚ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِي الْإِنْجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْأَهُ فَآزَرَهُ فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ ۗ وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ مِنْهُمْ مَغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا (29

    "محمد(ص) اللہ کے رسول ہیں اور جو لوگ ان کے ساتھ ہیں وہ کفار کے لئے سخت ترین اور آپس میںانتہائی رحمدل ہیں تم انہیں دیکھوگے کہ بارگاہ ِاحدیّت میںسر خم کئے ہوئے سجدہ ریز ہیںاور اپنے پروردگارسے فضل وکرم اور اس کی خوشنودی کے طلب گار ہیں ،کثرتِ سجود کی بنا پر ان کے چہروں پر سجدہ کے نشانات پائے جاتے ہیںیہی ان کی مثال تورےت میں ہے اور یہی ان کی صفت انجیل میں ہے جیسے کوئی کھیتی ہو جو پہلے سوئی نکالے پھر اسے مضبوط بنائے پھر وہ موٹی ہو جائے اور پھر اپنے پیروں پر کھڑی ہو جائے کہ کاشتکاروں کو خوش کرنے لگے تاکہ ان کے ذریعہ کفار کو جلایا جائے اور اللہ نے صاحبانِ ایمان وعمل صالح سے مغفرت اور عظیم اجر کا وعدہ کیا ہے"

    [YOUSAF ALI] Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow and prostrate themselves (in prayer), seeking Grace from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their marks, (being) the traces of their prostration. This is their similitude in the Taurat; and their similitude in the Gospel is: like a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem, (filling) the sowers with wonder and delight. As a result, it fills the Unbelievers with rage at them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness, and a great Reward.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. Thou (O Muhammad) seest them bowing and falling prostrate (in worship), seeking bounty from Allah and (His) acceptance. The mark of them is on their foreheads from the traces of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah and their likeness in the Gospel - like as sown corn that sendeth forth its shoot and strengtheneth it and riseth firm upon its stalk, delighting the sowers - that He may enrage the disbelievers with (the sight of) them. Allah hath promised, unto such of them as believe and do good works, forgiveness and immense reward.

    [ SHAKIR ] Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm of heart against the unbelievers, compassionate among themselves; you will see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and pleasure; their marks are in their faces because of the effect of prostration; that is their description in the Taurat and their description in the Injeel; like as seed-produce that puts forth its sprout, then strengthens it, so it becomes stout and stands firmly on its stem, delighting the sowers that He may enrage the unbelievers on account of them; Allah has promised those among them who believe and do good, forgiveness and a great reward.


  11. Sura: 49 - al-Hujraat (The Inner Apartments) Ayat: 9

    وَإِنْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْتَتَلُوا فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَإِنْ بَغَتْ إِحْدَاهُمَا عَلَى الْأُخْرَىٰ فَقَاتِلُوا الَّتِي تَبْغِي حَتَّىٰ تَفِيءَ إِلَىٰ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ فَإِنْ فَاءَتْ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا بِالْعَدْلِ وَأَقْسِطُوا ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ (9

    اور اگر مومنین کے دو گروہ آپس میں جھگڑا کریں تو تم سب ان کے درمیان صلح کراؤ اس کے بعد اگر ایک دوسرے پر ظلم کرے تو سب مل کر اس سے جنگ کرو جو زیادتی کرنے والا گروہ ہے یہاں تک کہ وہ بھی حکم خدا کی طرف واپس آجائے پھر اگر پلٹ آئے تو عدل کے ساتھ اصلاح کردو اور انصاف سے کام لو کہ خدا انصاف کرنے والوں کو دوست رکھتا ہے

    [YOUSAF ALI] If two parties among the Believers fall into a quarrel, make ye peace between them: but if one of them transgresses beyond bounds against the other, then fight ye (all) against the one that transgresses until it complies with the command of Allah; but if it complies, then make peace between them with justice, and be fair: for Allah loves those who are fair (and just).

    [ PICKTHAL ] And if two parties of believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them. And if one party of them doeth wrong to the other, fight ye that which doeth wrong till it return unto the ordinance of Allah; then, if it return, make peace between them justly, and act equitably. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable.

    [ SHAKIR ] And if two parties of the believers quarrel, make peace between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully towards the other, fight that which acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah's command; then if it returns, make peace between them with justice and act equitably; surely Allah loves those who act equitably.


  12. Sura: 59 - al-Hashr (The Exile) Ayat: 9

    وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُوا الدَّارَ وَالْإِيمَانَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ حَاجَةً مِمَّا أُوتُوا وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ ۚ وَمَنْ يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ (9

    اور جن لوگوں نے دارالہجرت اور ایمان کو ان سے پہلے اختیار کیا تھا وہ ہجرت کرنے والوں کو دوست رکھتے ہیں اور جو کچھ انہیں دیا گیا ہے اپنے دلوں میں اس کی طرف سے کوئی ضرورت نہیں محسوس کرتے ہیں اور اپنے نفس پر دوسروں کو مقدم کرتے ہیں چاہے انہیں کتنی ہی ضرورت کیوں نہ ہو.... اور جسے بھی اس کیے نفس کی حرص سے بچالیا جائے وہی لوگ نجات پانے والے ہیں

    [YOUSAF ALI] But those who before them, had homes (in Medina) and had adopted the Faith,- show their affection to such as came to them for refuge, and entertain no desire in their hearts for things given to the (latter), but give them preference over themselves, even though poverty was their (own lot). And those saved from the covetousness of their own souls,- they are the ones that achieve prosperity.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Those who entered the city and the faith before them love those who flee unto them for refuge, and find in their breasts no need for that which hath been given them, but prefer (the fugitives) above themselves though poverty become their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice - such are they who are successful.

    [ SHAKIR ] And those who made their abode in the city and in the faith before them love those who have fled to them, and do not find in their hearts a need of what they are given, and prefer (them) before themselves though poverty may afflict them, and whoever is preserved from the niggardliness of his soul, these it is that are the successful ones.
