  1. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 29

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who hath created for you all things that are on earth; Moreover His design comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and of all things He hath perfect knowledge.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who created for you all that is in the earth. Then turned He to the heaven, and fashioned it as seven heavens. And He is knower of all things.

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who created for you all that is in the earth, and He directed Himself to the heaven, so He made them complete seven heavens, and He knows all things.

  2. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 164

    (164

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind; in the rain which Allah Sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dead; in the beasts of all kinds that He scatters through the earth; in the change of the winds, and the clouds which they Trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth;- (Here) indeed are Signs for a people that are wise.

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and (in) the ordinance of the winds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth: are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for people who have sense.

[ SHAKIR ] Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships that run in the sea with that which profits men, and the water that Allah sends down from the cloud, then gives life with it to the earth after its death and spreads in it all (kinds of) animals, and the changing of the winds and the clouds made subservient between the heaven and the earth, there are signs for a people who understand.

  3. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 190 to 191

    (190

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding,-

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and (in) the difference of night and day are tokens (of His Sovereignty) for men of understanding,

[ SHAKIR ] Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who understand.

  4. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 190 to 191

    (191

[YOUSAF ALI] Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.

[ PICKTHAL ] Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: Our Lord! Thou hast not created this in vain! Glory be to Thee; save us then from the chastisement of the fire:

  5. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 99

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who sendeth down rain from the skies: with it We produce vegetation of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops), out of which We produce grain, heaped up (at harvest); out of the date-palm and its sheaths (or spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there are) gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit, feast your eyes with the fruit and the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are signs for people who believe.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who sendeth down water from the sky, and therewith We bring forth buds of every kind; We bring forth the green blade from which We bring forth the thick-clustered grain; and from the date-palm, from the pollen thereof, spring pendant bunches; and (We bring forth) gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and unlike. Look upon the fruit thereof, when they bear fruit, and upon its ripening. Lo! herein verily are portents for a people who believe.

[ SHAKIR ] And He it is Who sends down water from the cloud, then We bring forth with it buds of all (plants), then We bring forth from it green (foliage) from which We produce grain piled up (in the ear); and of the palm-tree, of the sheaths of it, come forth clusters (of dates) within reach, and gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike; behold the fruit of it when it yields the fruit and the ripening of it; most surely there are signs in this for a people who believe.

  6. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 165

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who hath made you (His) agents, inheritors of the earth: He hath raised you in ranks, some above others: that He may try you in the gifts He hath given you: for thy Lord is quick in punishment: yet He is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who hath placed you as viceroys of the earth and hath exalted some of you in rank above others, that He may try you by (the test of) that which He hath given you. Lo! Thy Lord is swift in prosecution, and Lo! He verily is Forgiving, Merciful.

[ SHAKIR ] And He it is Who has made you successors in the land and raised some of you above others by (various) grades, that He might try you by what He has given you; surely your Lord is quick to requite (evil), and He is most surely the Forgiving, the Merciful.

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand.

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who appointed the sun a splendour and the moon a light, and measured for her stages, that ye might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. Allah created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge.

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light, and ordained for it mansions that you might know the computation of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create it but with truth; He makes the signs manifest for a people who

[YOUSAF ALI] Then We made you heirs in the land after them, to see how ye would behave!

[ PICKTHAL ] Then We appointed you viceroys in the earth after them, that We might see how ye behave.

[ SHAKIR ] Then We made you successors in the land after them so that We may see how you act.

[YOUSAF ALI] Nor did We send before thee (as messengers) any but men, whom we did inspire,- (men) living in human habitations. Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? But the home of the hereafter is best, for those who do right. Will ye not then understand?

[ PICKTHAL ] We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense? -

[ SHAKIR ] And We have not sent before you but men from (among) the people of the towns, to whom We sent revelations. Have they not then travelled in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? And certainly the abode of the hereafter is best for those who guard (against evil); do you not then understand?

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold, Moses said to his attendant, "I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travel."

[ PICKTHAL ] And when Moses said unto his servant: I will not give up until I reach the point where the two rivers meet, though I march on for ages.

[ SHAKIR ] And when Musa said to his servant: I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two rivers or I will go on for years.

  19. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 86

[YOUSAF ALI] Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness."

[ PICKTHAL ] Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness.

[ SHAKIR ] Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea, and found by it a people. We said: O Zulqarnain! either give them a chastisement or do them a benefit.

  20. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 90

[YOUSAF ALI] Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun.

[ PICKTHAL ] Till, when he reached the rising-place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had appointed no shelter therefrom.

    [ SHAKIR ] Until when he reached the land of the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people to whom We had given no shelter from It;

  21. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 93

[YOUSAF ALI] Until, when he reached (a tract) between two mountains, he found, beneath them, a people who scarcely understood a word.

[ PICKTHAL ] Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying.

[ SHAKIR ] Until when he reached (a place) between the two mountains, he found on that side of them a people who could hardly understand a word.

  22. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 97

[YOUSAF ALI] Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it.

[ PICKTHAL ] And (Gog and Magog) were not able to surmount, nor could they pierce (it).

[ SHAKIR ] So they were not able to scale it nor could they make a hole in it.

  23. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) Ayat: 46

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

[ SHAKIR ] Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

  24. Sura: 24 - an-Noor (The Light) Ayat: 43

[YOUSAF ALI] Seest thou not that Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap? - then wilt thou see rain issue forth from their midst. And He sends down from the sky mountain masses (of clouds) wherein is hail: He strikes therewith whom He pleases and He turns it away from whom He pleases, the vivid flash of His lightning well-nigh blinds the sight.

[ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou not seen how Allah wafteth the clouds, then gathereth them, then maketh them layers, and thou seest the rain come forth from between them; He sendeth down from the heaven mountains wherein is hail, and smiteth therewith whom He will, and averteth it from whom He will. The flashing of His lightning all but snatcheth away the sight.

[ SHAKIR ] Do you not see that Allah drives along the clouds, then gathers them together, then piles them up, so that you see the rain coming forth from their midst? And He sends down of the clouds that are (like) mountains wherein is hail, afflicting therewith whom He pleases and turning it away from whom He pleases; the flash of His lightning almost takes away the sight.

  25. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) Ayat: 53

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed.

[ PICKTHAL ] And He it is Who hath given independence to the two seas (though they meet); one palatable, sweet, and the other saltish, bitter; and hath set a bar and a forbidding ban between them.

[ SHAKIR ] And He it is Who has made two seas to flow freely, the one sweet that subdues thirst by its sweetness, and the other salt that burns by its saltness; and between the two He has made a barrier and inviolable obstruction.

  26. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) Ayat: 60

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who has created the heavens and the earth, and Who sends you down rain from the sky? Yea, with it We cause to grow well-planted orchards full of beauty of delight: it is not in your power to cause the growth of the trees in them. (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, they are a people who swerve from justice.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who created the heavens and the earth, and sendeth down for you water from the sky wherewith We cause to spring forth joyous orchards, whose trees it never hath been yours to cause to grow. Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but they are folk who ascribe equals (unto Him)!

[ SHAKIR ] Nay, He Who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down for you water from the cloud; then We cause to grow thereby beautiful gardens; it is not possible for you that you should make the trees thereof to grow. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! they are people who deviate.

  27. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) Ayat: 61

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, most of them know not.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not!

[ SHAKIR ] Or, Who made the earth a restingplace, and made in it rivers, and raised on it mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! most of them do not know!

  28. Sura: 31 - Luqman (Luqman) Ayat: 10

[YOUSAF ALI] He created the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs.

[ PICKTHAL ] He hath created the heavens without supports that ye can see, and hath cast into the earth firm hills, so that it quake not with you; and He hath dispersed therein all kinds of beasts. And We send down water from the sky and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein.

[ SHAKIR ] He created the heavens without pillars as you see them, and put mountains upon the earth lest it might convulse with you, and He spread in it animals of every kind; and We sent down water from the cloud, then caused to grow therein (vegetation) of every noble kind.

  29. Sura: 31 - Luqman (Luqman) Ayat: 12

[YOUSAF ALI] we bestowed (in the past) Wisdom on Luqman: "Show (thy) gratitude to Allah." Any who is (so) grateful does so to the profit of his own soul: but if any is ungrateful, verily Allah is free of all wants, Worthy of all praise.

[ PICKTHAL ] And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

[ SHAKIR ] And certainly We gave wisdom to Luqman, saying: Be grateful to Allah. And whoever is grateful, he is on!y grateful for his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, Praised.

  30. Sura: 33 - al-Ahzaab (The Clans) Ayat: 22

[YOUSAF ALI] When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said: "This is what Allah and his Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger told us what was true." And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience.

[ PICKTHAL ] And when the true believers saw the clans, they said: This is that which Allah and His messenger promised us. Allah and His messenger are true. It did but confirm them in their faith and resignation.

[ SHAKIR ] And when the believers saw the allies, they said: This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth; and it only increased them in faith and submission.

  31. Sura: 35 - Faatir (The Originator) Ayat: 28

[YOUSAF ALI] And so amongst men and crawling creatures and cattle, are they of various colours. Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for Allah is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.

[ PICKTHAL ] And of men and beasts and cattle, in like manner, divers hues? The erudite among His bondmen fear Allah alone. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.

[ SHAKIR ] And of men and beasts and cattle are various species of it likewise; those of His servants only who are possessed of knowledge fear Allah; surely Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.

    [YOUSAF ALI] And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw therefrom the Day, and behold they are plunged in darkness;

[ PICKTHAL ] A token unto them is night. We strip it of the day, and lo! they are in darkness.

[YOUSAF ALI] And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

[ PICKTHAL ] And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.

[ SHAKIR ] And the sun runs on to a term appointed for it; that is the ordinance of the Mighty, the Knowing.

  34. Sura: 36 - Yaseen (Yaseen) From Ayat: 37 to 40

[YOUSAF ALI] And the Moon,- We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.

[ PICKTHAL ] And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.

[ SHAKIR ] And (as for) the moon, We have ordained for it stages till it becomes again as an old dry palm branch.

  35. Sura: 36 - Yaseen (Yaseen) From Ayat: 37 to 40

[YOUSAF ALI] It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).

[ PICKTHAL ] It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.

[ SHAKIR ] Neither is it allowable to the sun that it should overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; and all float on in a sphere.
