- Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) Ayat: 137
[YOUSAF ALI] Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth.
[ PICKTHAL ] Systems have passed away before you. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for those who did deny (the messengers).
[ SHAKIR ] Indeed there have been examples before you; therefore travel in the earth and see what was the end of the rejecters.
- Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 11
[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "Travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth."
[ PICKTHAL ] Say (unto the disbelievers): Travel in the land, and see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!
[ SHAKIR ] Say: Travel in the land, then see what was the end of the rejecters.

[YOUSAF ALI] How many towns have We destroyed (for their sins)? Our punishment took them on a sudden by night or while they slept for their afternoon rest.
[ PICKTHAL ] How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came unto them.
[ SHAKIR ] And how many a town that We destroyed, so Our punishment came to it by night or while they slept at midday.
- Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 4 to 5
[YOUSAF ALI] When (thus) Our punishment took them, no cry did they utter but this: "Indeed we did wrong."
[ PICKTHAL ] No plea had they, when Our terror came unto them, save that they said: Lo! We were wrong-doers.
[ SHAKIR ] Yet their cry, when Our punishment came to them, was nothing but that they said: Surely we were unjust.
- Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 64

[YOUSAF ALI] But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people!
[ PICKTHAL ] But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our tokens. Lo! they were blind folk.
[ SHAKIR ] But they called him a liar, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our communications; surely they were a blind people.

[YOUSAF ALI] To the 'Ad people, (We sent) Hud, one of their (own) brethren: He said: O my people! worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him will ye not fear (Allah)?"
[ PICKTHAL ] And unto (the tribe of) A'ad (We sent) their brother, Hud. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?
[ SHAKIR ] And to Ad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; will you not then guard (against evil)?
- Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 71 to 72
[YOUSAF ALI] He said: "Punishment and wrath have already come upon you from your Lord: dispute ye with me over names which ye have devised - ye and your fathers,- without authority from Allah? then wait: I am amongst you, also waiting."
[ PICKTHAL ] He said: Terror and wrath from your Lord have already fallen on you. Would ye wrangle with me over names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which no warrant from Allah hath been revealed? Then await (the consequence), lo! I (also) am of those awaiting (it).
[ SHAKIR ] He said: Indeed uncleanness and wrath from your Lord have lighted upon you; what! do you dispute with me about names which you and your fathers have given? Allah has not sent any authority for them; wait then, I too with you will be of those who wait.

[YOUSAF ALI] We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe.
[ PICKTHAL ] And We saved him and those with him by a mercy from Us, and We cut the root of those who denied Our revelations and were not believers.
[ SHAKIR ] So We delivered him and those with him by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last of those who rejected Our communications and were not believers.

[YOUSAF ALI] "And remember how He made you inheritors after the 'Ad people and gave you habitations in the land: ye build for yourselves palaces and castles in (open) plains, and care out homes in the mountains; so bring to remembrance the benefits (ye have received) from Allah, and refrain from evil and mischief on the earth."
[ PICKTHAL ] And remember how He made you viceroys after A'ad and gave you station in the earth. Ye choose castles in the plains and hew the mountains into dwellings. So remember (all) the bounties of Allah and do not evil, making mischief in the earth.
[ SHAKIR ] And remember when He made you successors after Ad and settled you in the land-- you make mansions on its plains and hew out houses in the mountains-- remember therefore Allah's benefits and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief.

[YOUSAF ALI] The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were reckoned powerless - those among them who believed: "know ye indeed that Salih is a messenger from his Lord?" They said: "We do indeed believe in the revelation which hath been sent through him."
[ PICKTHAL ] The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said unto those whom they despised, unto such of them as believed: Know ye that Salih is one sent from his Lord? They said: Lo! In that wherewith he hath been sent we are believers.
[ SHAKIR ] The chief of those who behaved proudly among his people said to those who were considered weak, to those who believed from among them: Do you know that Salih is sent by his Lord? They said: Surely we are believers in what he has been sent with

[YOUSAF ALI] The Arrogant party said: "For our part, we reject what ye believe in."

[YOUSAF ALI] To the Madyan people We sent Shu'aib, one of their own brethren: he said: "O my people! worship Allah; Ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due; and do no mischief on the earth after it has been set in order: that will be best for you, if ye have Faith.
[ PICKTHAL ] And unto Midian (We sent) their brother, Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Lo! a clear proof hath come unto you from your Lord; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not mankind in their goods, and work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering thereof. That will be better for you, if ye are believers.
[ SHAKIR ] And to Madyan (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; clear proof indeed has come to you from your Lord, therefore give full measure and weight and do not diminish to men their things, and do not make mischief in the land after its reform; this is better for you if you are believers:

[YOUSAF ALI] As if they had never dwelt and flourished there! Ah! Behold! How the Madyan were removed (from sight) as were removed the Thamud!
[ PICKTHAL ] As though they had not dwelt there. A far removal for Midian, even as Thamud had been removed afar!
[ SHAKIR ] As though they had never dwelt in them; now surely perdition overtook Madyan as had perished Samood.

[YOUSAF ALI] Nor did We send before thee (as messengers) any but men, whom we did inspire,- (men) living in human habitations. Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? But the home of the hereafter is best, for those who do right. Will ye not then understand?
[ PICKTHAL ] We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense? -
[ SHAKIR ] And We have not sent before you but men from (among) the people of the towns, to whom We sent revelations. Have they not then travelled in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? And certainly the abode of the hereafter is best for those who guard (against evil); do you not then understand?

[YOUSAF ALI] Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came messengers with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up to their mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us."
[ PICKTHAL ] Hath not the history of those before you reached you: the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and those after them? None save Allah knoweth them. Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs, but they thrust their hands into their mouths, and said: Lo! we disbelieve in that wherewith ye have been sent, and lo! we are in grave doubt concerning that to which ye call us.
[ SHAKIR ] Has not the account reached you of those before you, of the people of Nuh and Ad and Samood, and those after them? None knows them but Allah. Their messengers come to them with clear arguments, but they thrust their hands into their mouths and said: Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt as to that to which you invite us.

[YOUSAF ALI] Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."
[ PICKTHAL ] Their messengers said: Can there be doubt concerning Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calleth you that He may forgive you your sins and reprieve you unto an appointed term. They said: Ye are but mortals like us, who would fain turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Then bring some clear warrant.
[ SHAKIR ] Their messengers said: Is there doubt about Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? He invites you to forgive you your faults and to respite you till an appointed term. They said: You are nothing but mortals like us; you wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship; bring us therefore some clear authority.

[YOUSAF ALI] Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust.
[ PICKTHAL ] Their messengers said unto them: We are but mortals like you, but Allah giveth grace unto whom He will of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you a warrant unless by the permission of Allah. In Allah let believers put their trust!
[ SHAKIR ] Their messengers said to them: We are nothing but mortals like yourselves, but Allah bestows (His) favors on whom He pleases of His servants, and it is not for us that we should bring you an authority except by Allah's permission; and on Allah should the believers rely.

[YOUSAF ALI] "No reason have we why we should not put our trust on Allah. Indeed He Has guided us to the Ways we (follow). We shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us. For those who put their trust should put their trust on Allah."
[ PICKTHAL ] How should we not put our trust in Allah when He hath shown us our ways? We surely will endure the hurt ye do us. In Allah let the trusting put their trust.
[ SHAKIR ] And what reason have we that we should not rely on Allah? And He has indeed guided us in our ways; and certainly we would bear with patience your persecution of us; and on Allah should the reliant rely.

[YOUSAF ALI] That which is on earth we have made but as a glittering show for the earth, in order that We may test them - as to which of them are best in conduct.
[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! We have placed all that is on the earth as an ornament thereof that We may try them: which of them is best in conduct.
[ SHAKIR ] Surely We have made whatever is on the earth an embellishment for it, so that We may try them (as to) which of them is best in works.
- Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Set forth to them the parable of two men: for one of them We provided two gardens of grape-vines and surrounded them with date palms; in between the two We placed corn-fields.
[ PICKTHAL ] Coin for them a similitude: Two men, unto one of whom We had assigned two gardens of grapes, and We had surrounded both with date-palms and had put between them tillage.
[ SHAKIR ] And set forth to them a parable of two men; for one of them We made two gardens of grape vines, and We surrounded them both with palms, and in the midst of them We made cornfields.

[YOUSAF ALI] Each of those gardens brought forth its produce, and failed not in the least therein: in the midst of them We caused a river to flow.
[ PICKTHAL ] Each of the gardens gave its fruit and withheld naught thereof. And We caused a river to gush forth therein.
[ SHAKIR ] Both these gardens yielded their fruits, and failed not aught thereof, and We caused a river to gush forth in their midst,

[YOUSAF ALI] (Abundant) was the produce this man had : he said to his companion, in the course of a mutual argument: "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (my following of) men."
[ PICKTHAL ] And he had fruit. And he said unto his comrade, when he spake with him: I am more than thee in wealth, and stronger in respect of men.

[ PICKTHAL ] His comrade, when he (thus) spake with him, exclaimed: Disbelievest thou in Him Who created thee of dust, then of a drop (of seed), and then fashioned thee a man?
[ SHAKIR ] His companion said to him while disputing with him: Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you from dust, then from a small seed, then He made you a perfect man?

[ PICKTHAL ] If only, when thou enteredst thy garden, thou hadst said: That which Allah willeth (will come to pass)! There is no strength save in Allah! Though thou seest me as less than thee in wealth and children,
[ SHAKIR ] And wherefore did you not say when you entered your garden: It is as Allah has pleased, there is no power save in Allah? If you consider me to be inferior to you in wealth and children,

[YOUSAF ALI] So his fruits (and enjoyment) were encompassed (with ruin), and he remained twisting and turning his hands over what he had spent on his property, which had (now) tumbled to pieces to its very foundations, and he could only say, "Woe is me! Would I had never ascribed partners to my Lord and Cherisher!"
[ PICKTHAL ] And his fruit was beset (with destruction). Then began he to wring his hands for all that he had spent upon it, when (now) it was all ruined on its trellises, and to say: Would that I had ascribed no partner to my Lord!
[ SHAKIR ] And his wealth was destroyed; so he began to wring his hands for what he had spent on it, while it lay, having fallen down upon its roofs, and he said: Ah me! would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord.

[YOUSAF ALI] Wealth and sons are allurements of the life of this world: But the things that endure, good deeds, are best in the sight of thy Lord, as rewards, and best as (the foundation for) hopes.
[ PICKTHAL ] Wealth and children are an ornament of the life of the world. But the good deeds which endure are better in thy Lord's sight for reward, and better in respect of hope.
