  1. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 255

[YOUSAF ALI] Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).

[ PICKTHAL ] Allah! There is no deity save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.

[ SHAKIR ] Allah is He besides Whom there is no god, the Everliving, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist; slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His; who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot comprehend anything out of His knowledge except what He pleases, His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of them both tires Him not, and He is the Most High, the Great.

  2. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 256

[YOUSAF ALI] Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

[ PICKTHAL ] There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

[ SHAKIR ] There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the Shaitan and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

  3. Sura: 2 - al-Baqara (The Cow) Ayat: 269

[YOUSAF ALI] He granteth wisdom to whom He pleaseth; and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.

[ PICKTHAL ] He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.

[ SHAKIR ] He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom, he indeed is given a great good and none but men of understanding mind.

  4. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 26 to 27

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "O Allah! Lord of Power (And Rule), Thou givest power to whom Thou pleasest, and Thou strippest off power from whom Thou pleasest: Thou enduest with honour whom Thou pleasest, and Thou bringest low whom Thou pleasest: In Thy hand is all good. Verily, over all things Thou hast power.

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: O Allah! Owner of Sovereignty! Thou givest sovereignty unto whom Thou wilt, and Thou withdrawest sovereignty from whom Thou wilt. Thou exaltest whom Thou wilt, and Thou abasest whom Thou wilt. In Thy hand is the good. Lo! Thou art Able to do all things.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: O Allah, Master of the Kingdom! Thou givest the kingdom to whomsoever Thou pleasest and takest away the kingdom from whomsoever Thou pleasest, and Thou exaltest whom Thou pleasest and abasest whom Thou pleasest in Thine hand is the good; surety, Thou hast power over all things.

  5. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 26 to 27

[YOUSAF ALI] "Thou causest the night to gain on the day, and thou causest the day to gain on the night; Thou bringest the Living out of the dead, and Thou bringest the dead out of the Living; and Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou pleasest, without measure."

[ PICKTHAL ] Thou causest the night to pass into the day, and Thou causest the day to pass into the night. And Thou bringest forth the living from the dead, and Thou bringest forth the dead from the living. And Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou choosest, without stint.

[ SHAKIR ] Thou makest the night to pass into the day and Thou makest the day to pass into the night, and Thou bringest forth the living from the dead and Thou bringest forth the dead from the living, and Thou givest sustenance to whom Thou pleasest without measure.

  6. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 190 to 191

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding,-

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and (in) the difference of night and day are tokens (of His Sovereignty) for men of understanding,

[ SHAKIR ] Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who understand.

  7. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) From Ayat: 190 to 191

[YOUSAF ALI] Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.

[ PICKTHAL ] Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: Our Lord! Thou hast not created this in vain! Glory be to Thee; save us then from the chastisement of the fire:

  8. Sura: 4 - an-Nisaa' (The Women) Ayat: 163

[YOUSAF ALI] We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.

    [ PICKTHAL ] Lo! We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as We imparted unto David the Psalms;

[ SHAKIR ] Surely We have revealed to you as We revealed to Nuh, and the prophets after him, and We revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoub and the tribes, and Isa and Ayub and Yunus and Haroun and Sulaiman and We gave to Dawood

  9. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 50

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor do I tell you I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me." Say: "can the blind be held equal to the seeing?" Will ye then consider not?

[ PICKTHAL ] Say (O Muhammad, to the disbelievers): I say not unto you (that) I possess the treasures of Allah, nor that I have knowledge of the Unseen; and I say not unto you: Lo! I am an angel. I follow only that which is inspired in me. Say: Are the blind man and the seer equal? Will ye not then take thought?

[ SHAKIR ] Say: I do not say to you, I have with me the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel; I do not follow aught save that which is revealed to me. Say: Are the blind and the seeing one alike? Do you not then reflect?

  10. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 157

[YOUSAF ALI] "Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper."

[ PICKTHAL ] Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honour him, and help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him: they are the successful.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who follow the Messenger-Prophet, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Taurat and the Injeel (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful to them the good things and makes unlawful to them impure things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles which were upon them; so (as for) those who believe in him and honor him and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him, these it is that are the successful.

  11. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 188

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as Allah willeth. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me: I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith."

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: For myself I have no power to benefit, nor power to hurt, save that which Allah willeth. Had I knowledge of the Unseen, I should have abundance of wealth, and adversity would not touch me. I am but a warner, and a bearer of good tidings unto folk who believe.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: I do not control any benefit or harm for my own soul except as Allah please; and had I known the unseen I would have had much of good and no evil would have touched me; I am nothing but a warner and the giver of good news to a people who believe.

  12. Sura: 8 - al-Anfaal (The Spoils of War) Ayat: 22

[YOUSAF ALI] For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb,- those who understand not.

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! the worst of beasts in Allah's sight are the deaf, the dumb, who have no sense.

[ SHAKIR ] Surely the vilest of animals, in Allah's sight, are the deaf, the dumb, who do not understand.

  13. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) From Ayat: 16 to 17

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "If Allah had so willed, I should not have rehearsed it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. A whole life-time before this have I tarried amongst you: will ye not then understand?"

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: If Allah had so willed I should not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I dwelt among you a whole lifetime before it (came to me). Have ye then no sense?

[ SHAKIR ] Say: If Allah had desired (otherwise) I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have taught it to you; indeed I have lived a lifetime among you before it; do you not then understand?

  14. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) From Ayat: 16 to 17

[YOUSAF ALI] Who doth more wrong than such as forge a lie against Allah, or deny His Signs? But never will prosper those who sin.

[ PICKTHAL ] Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah and denieth His revelations? Lo! the guilty never are successful.

[ SHAKIR ] Who is then more unjust than who forges a lie against Allah or (who) gives the lie to His communications? Surely the guilty shall not be successful.

  15. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) Ayat: 36

[YOUSAF ALI] But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.

[ PICKTHAL ] Most of them follow not but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.

[ SHAKIR ] And most of them do not follow (anything) but conjecture; surely conjecture will not avail aught against the truth; surely Allah is cognizant of what they do.

  16. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) Ayat: 49

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except as Allah willeth. To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation)."

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: I have no power to hurt or benefit myself, save that which Allah willeth. For every nation there is an appointed time. When their time cometh, then they cannot put it off an hour, nor hasten (it).

[ SHAKIR ] Say: I do not control for myself any harm, or any benefit except what Allah pleases; every nation has a term; when their term comes, they shall not then remain behind for an hour, nor can they go before (their time).

  17. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 62

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us."

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: O Salih! Thou hast been among us hitherto as that wherein our hope was placed. Dost thou ask us not to worship what our fathers worshipped? Lo! we verily are in grave doubt concerning that to which thou callest us.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: O Salih! surely you were one amongst us in whom great expectations were placed before this; do you (now) forbid us from worshipping what our fathers worshipped? And as to that which you call us to, most surely we are in disquieting doubt.

  18. Sura: 13 - ar-Ra`ad (The Thunder) From Ayat: 14 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] For Him (alone) is prayer in Truth: any others that they call upon besides Him hear them no more than if they were to stretch forth their hands for water to reach their mouths but it reaches them not: for the prayer of those without Faith is nothing but (futile) wandering (in the mind).

[ PICKTHAL ] Unto Him is the real prayer. Those unto whom they pray beside Allah respond to them not at all, save as (is the response to) one who stretcheth forth his hands toward water (asking) that it may come unto his mouth, and it will never reach it. The prayer of disbelievers goeth (far) astray.

[ SHAKIR ] To Him is due the true prayer; and those whom they pray to besides Allah give them no answer, but (they are) like one who stretches forth his two hands towards water that it may reach his mouth, but it will not reach it; and the prayer of the unbelievers is only in error.

  19. Sura: 13 - ar-Ra`ad (The Thunder) From Ayat: 14 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] Whatever beings there are in the heavens and the earth do prostrate themselves to Allah (Acknowledging subjection),- with good-will or in spite of themselves: so do their shadows in the morning and evenings.

[ PICKTHAL ] And unto Allah falleth prostrate whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening hours.

[ SHAKIR ] And whoever is in the heavens and the earth makes obeisance to Allah only, willingly and unwillingly, and their shadows too at morn and eve.

  20. Sura: 13 - ar-Ra`ad (The Thunder) From Ayat: 14 to 16

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "Who is the Lord and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "(It is) Allah." Say: "Do ye then take (for worship) protectors other than Him, such as have no power either for good or for harm to themselves?" Say: "Are the blind equal with those who see? Or the depths of darkness equal with light?" Or do they assign to Allah partners who have created (anything) as He has created, so that the creation seemed to them similar? Say: "Allah is the Creator of all things: He is the One, the Supreme and Irresistible."

[ PICKTHAL ] Say (O Muhammad): Who is Lord of the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah. Say: Take ye then (others) beside Him for protectors, which, even for themselves, have neither benefit nor hurt? Say: Is the blind man equal to the seer, or is darkness equal to light? Or assign they unto Allah partners who created the like of His creation so that the creation (which they made and His creation) seemed alike to them? Say: Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Almighty.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?-- Say: Allah. Say: Do you take then besides Him guardians who do not control any profit or harm for themselves? Say: Are the blind and the seeing alike? Or can the darkness and the light be equal? Or have they set up with Allah associates who have created creation like His, so that what is created became confused to them? Say: Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Supreme.

  21. Sura: 13 - ar-Ra`ad (The Thunder) Ayat: 15

  22. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 48 to 50

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not look at Allah's creation, (even) among (inanimate) things,- How their (very) shadows turn round, from the right and the left, prostrating themselves to Allah, and that in the humblest manner?

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not observed all things that Allah hath created, how their shadows incline to the right and to the left, making prostration unto Allah, and they are lowly?

[ SHAKIR ] Do they not consider every thing that Allah has created? Its (very) shadows return from right and left, making obeisance to Allah while they are in utter abasement.

  23. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 48 to 50

[YOUSAF ALI] And to Allah doth obeisance all that is in the heavens and on earth, whether moving (living) creatures or the angels: for none are arrogant (before their Lord).

[ PICKTHAL ] And unto Allah maketh prostration whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth of living creatures, and the angels (also) and they are not proud.

[ SHAKIR ] And whatever creature that is in the heavens and that is in the earth makes obeisance to Allah (only), and the angels (too) and they do not show pride.

  24. Sura: 16 - an-Nahl (The Bee) From Ayat: 48 to 50

[YOUSAF ALI] They all revere their Lord, high above them, and they do all that they are commanded.

[ PICKTHAL ] They fear their Lord above them, and do what they are bidden.

[ SHAKIR ] They fear their Lord above them and do what they are commanded.

  25. Sura: 17 - al-Israa' (The Night Journey) From Ayat: 94 to 95

[YOUSAF ALI] What kept men back from belief when Guidance came to them, was nothing but this: they said, "Has Allah sent a man (like us) to be (His) Messenger?"

[ PICKTHAL ] And naught prevented mankind from believing when the guidance came unto them save that they said: Hath Allah sent a mortal as (His) messenger?

[ SHAKIR ] And nothing prevented people from believing when the guidance came to them except that they said: What! has Allah raised up a mortal to be a messenger?

  26. Sura: 17 - al-Israa' (The Night Journey) From Ayat: 94 to 95

[YOUSAF ALI] Say, "If there were settled, on earth, angels walking about in peace and quiet, We should certainly have sent them down from the heavens an angel for a messenger."

[ PICKTHAL ] Say: If there were in the earth angels walking secure, We had sent down for them from heaven an angel as messenger.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: Had there been in the earth angels walking about as settlers, We would certainly have sent down to them from the heaven an angel as a messenger.

  27. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 42 to 45

[YOUSAF ALI] Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not, and can profit thee nothing?

[ PICKTHAL ] When he said unto his father: O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee?

[ SHAKIR ] When he said to his father; O my father! why do you worship what neither hears nor sees, nor does it avail you in the least:

  28. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 42 to 45

[YOUSAF ALI] "O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a way that is even and straight.

[ PICKTHAL ] O my father! Lo! there hath come unto me of knowledge that which came not unto thee. So follow me, and I will lead thee on a right path.

[ SHAKIR ] O my father! truly the knowledge has come to me which has not come to you, therefore follow me, I will guide you on a right path:

  29. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 42 to 45

[YOUSAF ALI] "O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious.

[ PICKTHAL ] O my father! Serve not the devil. Lo! the devil is a rebel unto the Beneficent.

[ SHAKIR ] O my father! serve not the Shaitan, surely the Shaitan is disobedient to the Beneficent Allah:

  30. Sura: 19 - Maryam (Mary) From Ayat: 42 to 45

[YOUSAF ALI] "O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious, so that thou become to Satan a friend."

[ PICKTHAL ] O my father! Lo! I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent overtake thee so that thou become a comrade of the devil.

[ SHAKIR ] O my father! surely I fear that a punishment from the Beneficent Allah should afflict you so that you should be a friend of the Shaitan.

  31. Sura: 21 - al-Anbiyaa (The Prophets) Ayat: 7

[YOUSAF ALI] Before thee, also, the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: If ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message.

[ PICKTHAL ] And We sent not (as Our messengers) before thee other than men, whom We inspired. Ask the followers of the Reminder if ye know not?

[ SHAKIR ] And We did not send before you any but men to whom We sent revelation, so ask the followers of the reminder if you do not

  32. Sura: 21 - al-Anbiyaa (The Prophets) From Ayat: 16 to 18

[YOUSAF ALI] Not for (idle) sport did We create the heavens and the earth and all that is between!

[ PICKTHAL ] We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in play.

[ SHAKIR ] And We did not create the heaven and the earth and what is between them for sport.

  33. Sura: 21 - al-Anbiyaa (The Prophets) From Ayat: 16 to 18

[YOUSAF ALI] If it had been Our wish to take (just) a pastime, We should surely have taken it from the things nearest to Us, if We would do (such a thing)!

[ PICKTHAL ] If We had wished to find a pastime, We could have found it in Our presence - if We ever did.

[ SHAKIR ] Had We wished to make a diversion, We would have made it from before Ourselves: by no means would We do (it).

  34. Sura: 21 - al-Anbiyaa (The Prophets) From Ayat: 16 to 18

[YOUSAF ALI] Nay, We hurl the Truth against falsehood, and it knocks out its brain, and behold, falsehood doth perish! Ah! woe be to you for the (false) things ye ascribe (to Us).

[ PICKTHAL ] Nay, but We hurl the true against the false, and it doth break its head and lo! it vanisheth. And yours will be woe for that which ye ascribe (unto Him).

    [ SHAKIR ] Nay! We cast the truth against the falsehood, so that it breaks its head, and lo! it vanishes; and woe to you for what you describe;

  35. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 5 to 7

[YOUSAF ALI] O mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (our power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much), and (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs).

[ PICKTHAL ] O mankind! if ye are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make (it) clear for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then (give you growth) that ye attain your full strength. And among you there is he who dieth (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that, after knowledge, he knoweth naught. And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth).

[ SHAKIR ] O people! if you are in doubt about the raising, then surely We created you from dust, then from a small seed, then from a clot, then from a lump of flesh, complete in make and incomplete, that We may make clear to you; and We cause what We please to stay in the wombs till an appointed time, then We bring you forth as babies, then that you may attain your maturity; and of you is he who is caused to die, and of you is he who is brought back to the worst part of life, so that after having knowledge he does not know anything; and you see the earth sterile land, but when We send down on it the water, it stirs and swells and brings forth of every kind a beautiful herbage.

  36. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 5 to 7

[YOUSAF ALI] This is so, because Allah is the Reality: it is He Who gives life to the dead, and it is He Who has power over all things.

    [ PICKTHAL ] That is because Allah, He is the Truth and because He quickeneth the dead, and because He is Able to do all things;

[ SHAKIR ] This is because Allah is the Truth and because He gives life to the dead and because He has power over all things

  37. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 5 to 7

[YOUSAF ALI] And verily the Hour will come: there can be no doubt about it, or about (the fact) that Allah will raise up all who are in the graves.

[ PICKTHAL ] And because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves.

[ SHAKIR ] And because the hour is coming, there is no doubt about it; and because Allah shall raise up those who are in the graves.

  38. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) Ayat: 18

[YOUSAF ALI] Seest thou not that to Allah bow down in worship all things that are in the heavens and on earth,- the sun, the moon, the stars; the hills, the trees, the animals; and a great number among mankind? But a great number are (also) such as are fit for Punishment: and such as Allah shall disgrace,- None can raise to honour: for Allah carries out all that He wills.

[ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou not seen that unto Allah payeth adoration whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the hills, and the trees, and the beasts, and many of mankind, while there are many unto whom the doom is justly due. He whom Allah scorneth, there is none to give him honour. Lo! Allah doeth what He will.

[ SHAKIR ] Do you not see that Allah is He, Whom obeys whoever is in the heavens and whoever is in the earth, and the sun and the moon and the stars, and the mountains and the trees, and the animals and many of the people; and many there are against whom chastisement has become necessary; and whomsoever Allah abases, there is none who can make him honorable; surely Allah does what He pleases.

  39. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 73 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!

[ PICKTHAL ] O mankind! A similitude is coined, so pay ye heed to it: Lo! those on whom ye call beside Allah will never create a fly though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly took something from them, they could not rescue it from it. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought!

[ SHAKIR ] O people! a parable is set forth, therefore listen to it: surely those whom you call upon besides Allah cannot create fly, though they should all gather for it, and should the fly snatch away anything from them, they could not take it back from i weak are the invoker and the invoked.

  40. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 73 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] No just estimate have they made of Allah: for Allah is He Who is strong and able to Carry out His Will.

[ PICKTHAL ] They measure not Allah His rightful measure. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.

[ SHAKIR ] They have not estimated Allah with the estimation that i due to Him; most surely Allah is Strong, Mighty.

  41. Sura: 23 - al-Mu'minoon (The Believers) Ayat: 24

[YOUSAF ALI] The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."

[ PICKTHAL ] But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.

[ SHAKIR ] And the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who desires that he may have superiority over you, and if Allah had pleased, He could certainly have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore:

  42. Sura: 23 - al-Mu'minoon (The Believers) Ayat: 33

[YOUSAF ALI] And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink.

[ PICKTHAL ] And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink.

[ SHAKIR ] And the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and called the meeting of the hereafter a lie, and whom We had given plenty to enjoy in this world's life, said: This is nothing but a mortal like yourselves, eating of what you eat from and drinking of what you drink.

  43. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) Ayat: 7

[YOUSAF ALI] And they say: "What sort of a messenger is this, who eats food, and walks through the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to him to give admonition with him?

[ PICKTHAL ] And they say: What aileth this messenger (of Allah) that he eateth food and walketh in the markets? Why is not an angel sent down unto him, to be a warner with him.

[ SHAKIR ] And they say: What is the matter with this Messenger that he eats food and goes about in the markets; why has not an angel been sent down to him, so that he should have been a warner with him?

  44. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) Ayat: 20

[YOUSAF ALI] And the messengers whom We sent before thee were all (men) who ate food and walked through the streets: We have made some of you as a trial for others: will ye have patience? for Allah is One Who sees (all things).

[ PICKTHAL ] We never sent before thee any messengers but lo! they verily ate food and walked in the markets. And We have appointed some of you a test for others: Will ye be steadfast? And thy Lord is ever Seer.

[ SHAKIR ] And We have not sent before you any messengers but they most surely ate food and went about in the markets; and We have made some of you a trial for others; will you bear patiently? And your Lord is ever Seeing.

  45. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) From Ayat: 43 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?

[ PICKTHAL ] Hast thou seen him who chooseth for his god his own lust? Wouldst thou then be guardian over him?

[ SHAKIR ] Have you seen him who takes his low desires for his god? Will you then be a protector over him?

  46. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) From Ayat: 43 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Or thinkest thou that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle;- nay, they are worse astray in Path.

[ PICKTHAL ] Or deemest thou that most of them hear or understand? They are but as the cattle - nay, but they are farther astray?

[ SHAKIR ] Or do you think that most of them do hear or understand? They are nothing but as cattle; nay, they are straying farther off from the path.

  47. Sura: 26 - ash-Shu`araa (The Poets) From Ayat: 71 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them."

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: We worship idols, so we shall be their votaries.

  48. Sura: 26 - ash-Shu`araa (The Poets) From Ayat: 71 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?"

[ PICKTHAL ] He said: Do they hear you when ye cry?

[ SHAKIR ] He said: Do they hear you when you call?

  49. Sura: 26 - ash-Shu`araa (The Poets) From Ayat: 71 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] "Or do you good or harm?"

[ PICKTHAL ] Or do they benefit or harm you?

[ SHAKIR ] Or do they profit you or cause you harm?

  50. Sura: 26 - ash-Shu`araa (The Poets) From Ayat: 71 to 74

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: Nay, we found our fathers doing so.

  51. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) From Ayat: 60 to 64

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who has created the heavens and the earth, and Who sends you down rain from the sky? Yea, with it We cause to grow well-planted orchards full of beauty of delight: it is not in your power to cause the growth of the trees in them. (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, they are a people who swerve from justice.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who created the heavens and the earth, and sendeth down for you water from the sky wherewith We cause to spring forth joyous orchards, whose trees it never hath been yours to cause to grow. Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but they are folk who ascribe equals (unto Him)!

[ SHAKIR ] Nay, He Who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down for you water from the cloud; then We cause to grow thereby beautiful gardens; it is not possible for you that you should make the trees thereof to grow. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! they are people who deviate.

  52. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) From Ayat: 60 to 64

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, most of them know not.

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not!

[ SHAKIR ] Or, Who made the earth a restingplace, and made in it rivers, and raised on it mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier. Is there a god with Allah? Nay! most of them do not know!

  53. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) From Ayat: 60 to 64

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and Who relieves its suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed!

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who answereth the wronged one when he crieth unto Him and removeth the evil, and hath made you viceroys of the earth? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Little do they reflect!

[ SHAKIR ] Or, Who answers the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes the evil, and He will make you successors in the earth. Is there a god with Allah? Little is it that you mind!

  54. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) From Ayat: 60 to 64

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who guides you through the depths of darkness on land and sea, and Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy? (Can there be another) god besides Allah?- High is Allah above what they associate with Him!

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who guideth you in the darkness of the land and the sea, He Who sendeth the winds as heralds of His mercy? Is there any Allah beside Allah? High Exalted be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him)!

[ SHAKIR ] Or, Who guides you in utter darkness of the land and the sea, and Who sends the winds as good news before His mercy. Is there a god with Allah? Exalted by Allah above what they associate (with Him).

  55. Sura: 27 - an-Naml (The Ant) From Ayat: 60 to 64

[YOUSAF ALI] Or, Who originates creation, then repeats it, and who gives you sustenance from heaven and earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Say, "Bring forth your argument, if ye are telling the truth!"

[ PICKTHAL ] Is not He (best) Who produceth creation, then reproduceth it, and Who provideth for you from the heaven and the earth? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Say: Bring your proof, if ye are truthful!

[ SHAKIR ] Or, Who originates the creation, then reproduces it and Who gives you sustenance from the heaven and the earth. Is there a god With Allah? Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful.

  56. Sura: 28 - al-Qasas (The Stories) Ayat: 49

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "Then bring ye a Book from Allah, which is a better guide than either of them, that I may follow it! (do), if ye are truthful!"

[ PICKTHAL ] Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Then bring a scripture from the presence of Allah that giveth clearer guidance than these two (that) I may follow it, if ye are truthful.

[ SHAKIR ] Say: Then bring some (other) book from Allah which is a better guide than both of them, (that) I may follow it, if you are truthful.

  57. Sura: 29 - al-`Ankaboot (The Spider) From Ayat: 60 to 62

[YOUSAF ALI] How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you: for He hears and knows (all things).

[ PICKTHAL ] And how many an animal there is that beareth not its own provision! Allah provideth for it and for you. He is the Hearer, the Knower.

[ SHAKIR ] And how many a living creature that does not carry its sustenance: Allah sustains it and yourselves; and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

  58. Sura: 29 - al-`Ankaboot (The Spider) From Ayat: 60 to 62

[YOUSAF ALI] If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?

[ PICKTHAL ] And if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? they would say: Allah. How then are they turned away?

[ SHAKIR ] And if you ask them, Who created the heavens and the earth and made the sun and the moon subservient, they will certainly say, Allah. Whence are they then turned away?

  59. Sura: 29 - al-`Ankaboot (The Spider) From Ayat: 60 to 62

[YOUSAF ALI] Allah enlarges the sustenance (which He gives) to whichever of His servants He pleases; and He (similarly) grants by (strict) measure, (as He pleases): for Allah has full knowledge of all things.

[ PICKTHAL ] Allah maketh the provision wide for whom He will of His bondmen, and straiteneth it for whom (He will). Lo! Allah is Aware of all things.

[ SHAKIR ] Allah makes abundant the means of subsistence for whom He pleases of His servants, and straitens them for whom (He pleases) surely Allah is Cognizant of all things.

[YOUSAF ALI] They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless.

[ PICKTHAL ] They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter.

[ SHAKIR ] They know the outward of this world's life, but of the hereafter they are absolutely heedless.

  61. Sura: 30 - ar-Room (The Romans) From Ayat: 7 to 9

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not reflect in their own minds? Not but for just ends and for a term appointed, did Allah create the heavens and the earth, and all between them: yet are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord (at the Resurrection)!

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not pondered upon themselves? Allah created not the heavens and the earth, and that which is between them, save with truth and for a destined end. But truly many of mankind are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord.

[ SHAKIR ] Do they not reflect within themselves: Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but with truth, and (for) an appointed term? And most surely most of the people are deniers of the meeting of their Lord.

  62. Sura: 30 - ar-Room (The Romans) From Ayat: 7 to 9

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). (Which they rejected, to their own destruction): It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls.

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? They were stronger than these in power, and they dug the earth and built upon it more than these have built. Messengers of their own came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Surely Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves.

[ SHAKIR ] Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than these in prowess, and dug up the earth, and built on it in greater abundance than these have built on it, and there came to them their messengers with clear arguments; so it was not beseeming for Allah that He should deal with them unjustly, but they dealt unjustly with their own souls.
