  1. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) Ayat: 151

[YOUSAF ALI] Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers!

[ PICKTHAL ] We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve because they ascribe unto Allah partners, for which no warrant hath been revealed. Their habitation is the Fire, and hapless the abode of the wrong-doers.

[ SHAKIR ] We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they set up with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority, and their abode is the fire, and evil is the abode of the unjust.

  2. Sura: 8 - al-Anfaal (The Spoils of War) From Ayat: 11 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] Remember He covered you with a sort of drowsiness, to give you calm as from Himself, and he caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to plant your feet firmly therewith.

[ PICKTHAL ] When He made the slumber fall upon you as a reassurance from him and sent down water from the sky upon you, that thereby He might purify you, and remove from you the fear of Satan, and make strong your hearts and firm (your) feet thereby.

[ SHAKIR ] When He caused calm to fall on you as a security from Him and sent down upon you water from the cloud that He might thereby purify you, and take away from you the uncleanness of the Shaitan, and that He might fortify your hearts and steady (your) footsteps thereby.

  3. Sura: 8 - al-Anfaal (The Spoils of War) From Ayat: 11 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them."

[ PICKTHAL ] When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.

[ SHAKIR ] When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

  4. Sura: 12 - Yusuf (Joseph) From Ayat: 93 to 96

[YOUSAF ALI] "Go with this my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father: he will come to see (clearly). Then come ye (here) to me together with all your family."

[ PICKTHAL ] Go with this shirt of mine and lay it on my father's face, he will become (again) a seer; and come to me with all your folk.

[ SHAKIR ] Take this my shirt and cast it on my father's face, he will (again) be able to see, and come to me with all your families.

  5. Sura: 12 - Yusuf (Joseph) From Ayat: 93 to 96

[YOUSAF ALI] When the caravan left (Egypt), their father said: "I do indeed scent the presence of Joseph: Nay, think me not a dotard."

[ PICKTHAL ] When the caravan departed their father had said: Truly I am conscious of the breath of Joseph, though ye call me dotard.

[ SHAKIR ] And when the caravan had departed, their father said: Most surely I perceive the greatness of Yusuf, unless you pronounce me to be weak in judgment.

  6. Sura: 12 - Yusuf (Joseph) From Ayat: 93 to 96

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "By Allah! truly thou art in thine old wandering mind."

[ PICKTHAL ] (Those around him) said: By Allah, lo! thou art in thine old aberration.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: By Allah, you are most surely in your old error.

  7. Sura: 12 - Yusuf (Joseph) From Ayat: 93 to 96

[YOUSAF ALI] Then when the bearer of the good news came, He cast (the shirt) over his face, and he forthwith regained clear sight. He said: "Did I not say to you, 'I know from Allah that which ye know not?'"

[ PICKTHAL ] Then, when the bearer of glad tidings came, he laid it on his face and he became a seer once more. He said: Said I not unto you that I know from Allah that which ye know not?

[ SHAKIR ] So when the bearer of good news came he cast it on his face, so forthwith he regained his sight. He said: Did I not say to you that I know from Allah what you do not know?

  8. Sura: 33 - al-Ahzaab (The Clans) Ayat: 26

[YOUSAF ALI] And those of the People of the Book who aided them - Allah did take them down from their strongholds and cast terror into their hearts. (So that) some ye slew, and some ye made prisoners.

[ PICKTHAL ] And He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some.

[ SHAKIR ] And He drove down those of the followers of the Book who backed them from their fortresses and He cast awe into their hearts; some you killed and you took captive another part.

  9. Sura: 36 - Yaseen (Yaseen) From Ayat: 66 to 67

[YOUSAF ALI] If it had been our Will, We could surely have blotted out their eyes; then should they have run about groping for the Path, but how could they have seen?

[ PICKTHAL ] And had We willed, We verily could have quenched their eyesight so that they should struggle for the way. Then how could they have seen?

[ SHAKIR ] And if We please We would certainly put out their eyes, then they would run about groping for the way, but how should they see?

  10. Sura: 36 - Yaseen (Yaseen) From Ayat: 66 to 67

[YOUSAF ALI] And if it had been Our Will, We could have transformed them (to remain) in their places; then should they have been unable to move about, nor could they have returned (after error).

[ PICKTHAL ] And had We willed, We verily could have fixed them in their place, making them powerless to go forward or turn back.

[ SHAKIR ] And if We please We would surely transform them in their place, then they would not be able to go on, nor will they return.

  11. Sura: 38 - Saad (The letter 'saad') From Ayat: 41 to 42

[YOUSAF ALI] Commemorate Our Servant Job. Behold he cried to his Lord: "The Evil One has afflicted me with distress and suffering!"

[ PICKTHAL ] And make mention (O Muhammad) of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord (saying): Lo! the devil doth afflict me with distress and torment.

[ SHAKIR ] And remember Our servant Ayyub, when he called upon his Lord: The Shaitan has afflicted me with toil and torment.

  12. Sura: 38 - Saad (The letter 'saad') From Ayat: 41 to 42

[YOUSAF ALI] (The command was given:) "Strike with thy foot: here is (water) wherein to wash, cool and refreshing, and (water) to drink."

[ PICKTHAL ] (And it was said unto him): Strike the ground with thy foot. This (spring) is a cool bath and a refreshing drink.

[ SHAKIR ] Urge with your foot; here is a cool washing-place and a drink.

  13. Sura: 59 - al-Hashr (The Exile) Ayat: 2

[YOUSAF ALI] It is He Who got out the Unbelievers among the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering (of the forces). Little did ye think that they would get out: And they thought that their fortresses would defend them from Allah! But the (Wrath of) Allah came to them from quarters from which they little expected (it), and cast terror into their hearts, so that they destroyed their dwellings by their own hands and the hands of the Believers, take warning, then, O ye with eyes (to see)!

[ PICKTHAL ] He it is Who hath caused those of the People of the Scripture who disbelieved to go forth from their homes unto the first exile. Ye deemed not that they would go forth, while they deemed that their strongholds would protect them from Allah. But Allah reached them from a place whereof they recked not, and cast terror in their hearts so that they ruined their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So learn a lesson, O ye who have eyes!

[ SHAKIR ] He it is Who caused those who disbelieved of the followers of the Book to go forth from their homes at the first banishment you did not think that they would go forth, while they were certain that their fortresses would defend them against Allah; but Allah came to them whence they did not expect, and cast terror into their hearts; they demolished their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers; therefore take a lesson, O you who have eyes!
