  1. Sura: 3 - aal-`Imraan (The Family of `Imraan) Ayat: 137

[YOUSAF ALI] Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth.

[ PICKTHAL ] Systems have passed away before you. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for those who did deny (the messengers).

[ SHAKIR ] Indeed there have been examples before you; therefore travel in the earth and see what was the end of the rejecters.

  2. Sura: 6 - al-An`aam (The Cattle) Ayat: 11

[YOUSAF ALI] Say: "Travel through the earth and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth."

[ PICKTHAL ] Say (unto the disbelievers): Travel in the land, and see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters!

[ SHAKIR ] Say: Travel in the land, then see what was the end of the rejecters.

  3. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 4 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] How many towns have We destroyed (for their sins)? Our punishment took them on a sudden by night or while they slept for their afternoon rest.

[ PICKTHAL ] How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came unto them.

[ SHAKIR ] And how many a town that We destroyed, so Our punishment came to it by night or while they slept at midday.

  4. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 4 to 5

[YOUSAF ALI] When (thus) Our punishment took them, no cry did they utter but this: "Indeed we did wrong."

[ PICKTHAL ] No plea had they, when Our terror came unto them, save that they said: Lo! We were wrong-doers.

[ SHAKIR ] Yet their cry, when Our punishment came to them, was nothing but that they said: Surely we were unjust.

  5. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 64

[YOUSAF ALI] But they rejected him, and We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark: but We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our signs. They were indeed a blind people!

[ PICKTHAL ] But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our tokens. Lo! they were blind folk.

[ SHAKIR ] But they called him a liar, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our communications; surely they were a blind people.

  6. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 65

[YOUSAF ALI] To the 'Ad people, (We sent) Hud, one of their (own) brethren: He said: O my people! worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him will ye not fear (Allah)?"

[ PICKTHAL ] And unto (the tribe of) A'ad (We sent) their brother, Hud. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?

[ SHAKIR ] And to Ad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; will you not then guard (against evil)?

  7. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 71 to 72

[YOUSAF ALI] He said: "Punishment and wrath have already come upon you from your Lord: dispute ye with me over names which ye have devised - ye and your fathers,- without authority from Allah? then wait: I am amongst you, also waiting."

[ PICKTHAL ] He said: Terror and wrath from your Lord have already fallen on you. Would ye wrangle with me over names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which no warrant from Allah hath been revealed? Then await (the consequence), lo! I (also) am of those awaiting (it).

[ SHAKIR ] He said: Indeed uncleanness and wrath from your Lord have lighted upon you; what! do you dispute with me about names which you and your fathers have given? Allah has not sent any authority for them; wait then, I too with you will be of those who wait.

  8. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 71 to 72

[YOUSAF ALI] We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe.

[ PICKTHAL ] And We saved him and those with him by a mercy from Us, and We cut the root of those who denied Our revelations and were not believers.

[ SHAKIR ] So We delivered him and those with him by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last of those who rejected Our communications and were not believers.

  9. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 74

[YOUSAF ALI] "And remember how He made you inheritors after the 'Ad people and gave you habitations in the land: ye build for yourselves palaces and castles in (open) plains, and care out homes in the mountains; so bring to remembrance the benefits (ye have received) from Allah, and refrain from evil and mischief on the earth."

[ PICKTHAL ] And remember how He made you viceroys after A'ad and gave you station in the earth. Ye choose castles in the plains and hew the mountains into dwellings. So remember (all) the bounties of Allah and do not evil, making mischief in the earth.

[ SHAKIR ] And remember when He made you successors after Ad and settled you in the land-- you make mansions on its plains and hew out houses in the mountains-- remember therefore Allah's benefits and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief.

  10. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 75 to 76

[YOUSAF ALI] The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were reckoned powerless - those among them who believed: "know ye indeed that Salih is a messenger from his Lord?" They said: "We do indeed believe in the revelation which hath been sent through him."

[ PICKTHAL ] The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said unto those whom they despised, unto such of them as believed: Know ye that Salih is one sent from his Lord? They said: Lo! In that wherewith he hath been sent we are believers.

[ SHAKIR ] The chief of those who behaved proudly among his people said to those who were considered weak, to those who believed from among them: Do you know that Salih is sent by his Lord? They said: Surely we are believers in what he has been sent with

  11. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 75 to 76

[YOUSAF ALI] The Arrogant party said: "For our part, we reject what ye believe in."

[ PICKTHAL ] Those who were scornful said: Lo! in that which ye believe we are disbelievers.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who were haughty said: Surely we are deniers of what you believe in.

  12. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 78

[YOUSAF ALI] So the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes in the morning!

[ PICKTHAL ] So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling-place.

[ SHAKIR ] Then the earthquake overtook them, so they became motionless bodies in their abode.

  13. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) Ayat: 85

[YOUSAF ALI] To the Madyan people We sent Shu'aib, one of their own brethren: he said: "O my people! worship Allah; Ye have no other god but Him. Now hath come unto you a clear (Sign) from your Lord! Give just measure and weight, nor withhold from the people the things that are their due; and do no mischief on the earth after it has been set in order: that will be best for you, if ye have Faith.

[ PICKTHAL ] And unto Midian (We sent) their brother, Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Lo! a clear proof hath come unto you from your Lord; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not mankind in their goods, and work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering thereof. That will be better for you, if ye are believers.

[ SHAKIR ] And to Madyan (We sent) their brother Shu'aib. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; clear proof indeed has come to you from your Lord, therefore give full measure and weight and do not diminish to men their things, and do not make mischief in the land after its reform; this is better for you if you are believers:

  14. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 90 to 92

[YOUSAF ALI] The leaders, the unbelievers among his people, said: "If ye follow Shu'aib, be sure then ye are ruined!"

[ PICKTHAL ] But the chieftains of his people, who were disbelieving, said: If ye follow Shu'eyb, then truly ye shall be the losers.

[ SHAKIR ] And the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: If you follow Shu'aib, you shall then most surely be losers

  15. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 90 to 92

[YOUSAF ALI] But the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes before the morning!

[ PICKTHAL ] So the earthquake seized them and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling-place.

[ SHAKIR ] Then the earthquake overtook them, so they became motionless bodies in their abode.

  16. Sura: 7 - al-A`araaf (The Heights) From Ayat: 90 to 92

[YOUSAF ALI] The men who reject Shu'aib became as if they had never been in the homes where they had flourished: the men who rejected Shu'aib - it was they who were ruined!

[ PICKTHAL ] Those who denied Shu'eyb became as though they had not dwelt there. Those who denied Shu'eyb, they were the losers.

[ SHAKIR ] Those who called Shu'aib a liar were as though they had never dwelt therein; those who called Shu'aib a liar, they were the losers.

  17. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) Ayat: 73

[YOUSAF ALI] They rejected Him, but We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark, and We made them inherit (the earth), while We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our Signs. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not)!

[ PICKTHAL ] But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and made them viceroys (in the earth), while We drowned those who denied Our revelations. See then the nature of the consequence for those who had been warned.

[ SHAKIR ] But they rejected him, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We made them rulers and drowned those who rejected Our communications; see then what was the end of the (people) warned.

  18. Sura: 10 - Yunus (Jonas) Ayat: 75

[YOUSAF ALI] Then after them sent We Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our Signs. But they were arrogant: they were a people in sin.

[ PICKTHAL ] Then, after them, We sent Moses and Aaron unto Pharaoh and his chiefs with Our revelations, but they were arrogant and were a guilty folk.

[ SHAKIR ] Then did We send up after them Musa and Haroun to Firon and his chiefs with Our signs, but they showed pride and they were a guilty people.

  19. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 53

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "O Hud! No Clear (Sign) that hast thou brought us, and we are not the ones to desert our gods on thy word! Nor shall we believe in thee!

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: O Hud! Thou hast brought us no clear proof and we are not going to forsake our gods on thy (mere) saying, and we are not believers in thee.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: O Hud! you have not brought to us any clear argument and we are not going to desert our gods for your word, and we are not believers in you:

  20. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 59 to 60

[YOUSAF ALI] Such were the 'Ad People: they rejected the Signs of their Lord and Cherisher; disobeyed His messengers; And followed the command of every powerful, obstinate transgressor.

[ PICKTHAL ] And such were A'ad. They denied the revelations of their Lord and flouted His messengers and followed the command of every froward potentate.

[ SHAKIR ] And this was Ad; they denied the communications of their Lord, and disobeyed His messengers and followed the bidding of every insolent opposer (of truth).

  21. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 59 to 60

[YOUSAF ALI] And they were pursued by a Curse in this life,- and on the Day of Judgment. Ah! Behold! for the 'Ad rejected their Lord and Cherisher! Ah! Behold! removed (from sight) were 'Ad the people of Hud!

[ PICKTHAL ] And a curse was made to follow them in the world and on the Day of Resurrection. Lo! A'ad disbelieved in their Lord. A far removal for A'ad, the folk of Hud!

[ SHAKIR ] And they were overtaken by curse in this world and on the resurrection day; now surely Ad disbelieved in their Lord; now surely, away with Ad, the people of Hud.

  22. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 62

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "O Salih! thou hast been of us! a centre of our hopes hitherto! dost thou (now) forbid us the worship of what our fathers worshipped? But we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which thou invitest us."

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: O Salih! Thou hast been among us hitherto as that wherein our hope was placed. Dost thou ask us not to worship what our fathers worshipped? Lo! we verily are in grave doubt concerning that to which thou callest us.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: O Salih! surely you were one amongst us in whom great expectations were placed before this; do you (now) forbid us from worshipping what our fathers worshipped? And as to that which you call us to, most surely we are in disquieting doubt.

  23. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 66 to 68

[YOUSAF ALI] When Our Decree issued, We saved Salih and those who believed with him, by (special) Grace from Ourselves - and from the Ignominy of that day. For thy Lord - He is the Strong One, and able to enforce His Will.

[ PICKTHAL ] So, when Our commandment came to pass, We saved Salih, and those who believed with him, by a mercy from Us, from the ignominy of that day. Lo, thy Lord! He is the Strong, the Mighty.

[ SHAKIR ] So when Our decree came to pass, We delivered Salih and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and (We saved them) from the disgrace of that day; surely your Lord is the Strong, the Mighty.

  24. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 66 to 68

[YOUSAF ALI] The (mighty) Blast overtook the wrong-doers, and they lay prostrate in their homes before the morning,-

[ PICKTHAL ] And the (awful) Cry overtook those who did wrong, so that morning found them prostrate in their dwellings,

[ SHAKIR ] And the rumbling overtook those who were unjust, so they became motionless bodies in their abodes,

  25. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 66 to 68

[YOUSAF ALI] As if they had never dwelt and flourished there. Ah! Behold! for the Thamud rejected their Lord and Cherisher! Ah! Behold! removed (from sight) were the Thamud!

[ PICKTHAL ] As though they had not dwelt there. Lo! Thamud disbelieved in their Lord. A far removal for Thamud!

[ SHAKIR ] As though they had never dwelt in them; now surely did Samood disbelieve in their Lord; now surely, away with Samood.

  26. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 82

[YOUSAF ALI] When Our Decree issued, We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay, spread, layer on layer,-

[ PICKTHAL ] So when Our commandment came to pass We overthrew (that township) and rained upon it stones of clay, one after another,

[ SHAKIR ] So when Our decree came to pass, We turned them upside down and rained down upon them stones, of what had been decreed, one after another.

  27. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 87

[YOUSAF ALI] They said: "O Shu'aib! Does thy (religion of) prayer command thee that we leave off the worship which our fathers practised, or that we leave off doing what we like with our property? truly, thou art the one that forbeareth with faults and is right-minded!"

[ PICKTHAL ] They said: O Shu'eyb! Doth thy way of prayer command thee that we should forsake that which our fathers (used to) worship, or that we (should leave off) doing what we will with our own property. Lo! thou art the mild, the guide to right behaviour.

[ SHAKIR ] They said: O Shu'aib! does your prayer enjoin you that we should forsake what our fathers worshipped or that we should not do what we please with regard to our property? Forsooth you are the forbearing, the right-directing one.

  28. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 94 to 95

[YOUSAF ALI] When Our decree issued, We saved Shu'aib and those who believed with him, by (special) mercy from Ourselves: But the (mighty) blast did seize the wrong-doers, and they lay prostrate in their homes by the morning,-

[ PICKTHAL ] And when Our commandment came to pass We saved Shu'eyb and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us; and the (Awful) Cry seized those who did injustice, and morning found them prostrate in their dwellings,

[ SHAKIR ] And when Our decree came to pass We delivered Shu'aib, and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and the rumbling overtook those who were unjust so they became motionless bodies in their abodes,

  29. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) From Ayat: 94 to 95

[YOUSAF ALI] As if they had never dwelt and flourished there! Ah! Behold! How the Madyan were removed (from sight) as were removed the Thamud!

[ PICKTHAL ] As though they had not dwelt there. A far removal for Midian, even as Thamud had been removed afar!

[ SHAKIR ] As though they had never dwelt in them; now surely perdition overtook Madyan as had perished Samood.

  30. Sura: 11 - Hud (Hud) Ayat: 120

[YOUSAF ALI] All that we relate to thee of the stories of the messengers,- with it We make firm thy heart: in them there cometh to thee the Truth, as well as an exhortation and a message of remembrance to those who believe.

[ PICKTHAL ] And all that We relate unto thee of the story of the messengers is in order that thereby We may make firm thy heart. And herein hath come unto thee the Truth and an exhortation and a reminder for believers.

[ SHAKIR ] And all we relate to you of the accounts of the messengers is to strengthen your heart therewith; and in this has come to you the truth and an admonition, and a reminder to the believers.

  32. Sura: 12 - Yusuf (Joseph) Ayat: 109

[YOUSAF ALI] Nor did We send before thee (as messengers) any but men, whom we did inspire,- (men) living in human habitations. Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? But the home of the hereafter is best, for those who do right. Will ye not then understand?

[ PICKTHAL ] We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense? -

[ SHAKIR ] And We have not sent before you but men from (among) the people of the towns, to whom We sent revelations. Have they not then travelled in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? And certainly the abode of the hereafter is best for those who guard (against evil); do you not then understand?

  33. Sura: 14 - Ibrahim (Abraham) From Ayat: 9 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came messengers with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up to their mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us."

[ PICKTHAL ] Hath not the history of those before you reached you: the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and those after them? None save Allah knoweth them. Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs, but they thrust their hands into their mouths, and said: Lo! we disbelieve in that wherewith ye have been sent, and lo! we are in grave doubt concerning that to which ye call us.

[ SHAKIR ] Has not the account reached you of those before you, of the people of Nuh and Ad and Samood, and those after them? None knows them but Allah. Their messengers come to them with clear arguments, but they thrust their hands into their mouths and said: Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt as to that to which you invite us.

  34. Sura: 14 - Ibrahim (Abraham) From Ayat: 9 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."

[ PICKTHAL ] Their messengers said: Can there be doubt concerning Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calleth you that He may forgive you your sins and reprieve you unto an appointed term. They said: Ye are but mortals like us, who would fain turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. Then bring some clear warrant.

[ SHAKIR ] Their messengers said: Is there doubt about Allah, the Maker of the heavens and the earth? He invites you to forgive you your faults and to respite you till an appointed term. They said: You are nothing but mortals like us; you wish to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship; bring us therefore some clear authority.

  35. Sura: 14 - Ibrahim (Abraham) From Ayat: 9 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves, but Allah doth grant His grace to such of his servants as He pleases. It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits. And on Allah let all men of faith put their trust.

[ PICKTHAL ] Their messengers said unto them: We are but mortals like you, but Allah giveth grace unto whom He will of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you a warrant unless by the permission of Allah. In Allah let believers put their trust!

[ SHAKIR ] Their messengers said to them: We are nothing but mortals like yourselves, but Allah bestows (His) favors on whom He pleases of His servants, and it is not for us that we should bring you an authority except by Allah's permission; and on Allah should the believers rely.

  36. Sura: 14 - Ibrahim (Abraham) From Ayat: 9 to 12

[YOUSAF ALI] "No reason have we why we should not put our trust on Allah. Indeed He Has guided us to the Ways we (follow). We shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us. For those who put their trust should put their trust on Allah."

[ PICKTHAL ] How should we not put our trust in Allah when He hath shown us our ways? We surely will endure the hurt ye do us. In Allah let the trusting put their trust.

[ SHAKIR ] And what reason have we that we should not rely on Allah? And He has indeed guided us in our ways; and certainly we would bear with patience your persecution of us; and on Allah should the reliant rely.

  37. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 7

[YOUSAF ALI] That which is on earth we have made but as a glittering show for the earth, in order that We may test them - as to which of them are best in conduct.

[ PICKTHAL ] Lo! We have placed all that is on the earth as an ornament thereof that We may try them: which of them is best in conduct.

[ SHAKIR ] Surely We have made whatever is on the earth an embellishment for it, so that We may try them (as to) which of them is best in works.

  38. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Set forth to them the parable of two men: for one of them We provided two gardens of grape-vines and surrounded them with date palms; in between the two We placed corn-fields.

[ PICKTHAL ] Coin for them a similitude: Two men, unto one of whom We had assigned two gardens of grapes, and We had surrounded both with date-palms and had put between them tillage.

[ SHAKIR ] And set forth to them a parable of two men; for one of them We made two gardens of grape vines, and We surrounded them both with palms, and in the midst of them We made cornfields.

  39. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Each of those gardens brought forth its produce, and failed not in the least therein: in the midst of them We caused a river to flow.

[ PICKTHAL ] Each of the gardens gave its fruit and withheld naught thereof. And We caused a river to gush forth therein.

[ SHAKIR ] Both these gardens yielded their fruits, and failed not aught thereof, and We caused a river to gush forth in their midst,

  40. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] (Abundant) was the produce this man had : he said to his companion, in the course of a mutual argument: "more wealth have I than you, and more honour and power in (my following of) men."

[ PICKTHAL ] And he had fruit. And he said unto his comrade, when he spake with him: I am more than thee in wealth, and stronger in respect of men.

[ SHAKIR ] And he possessed much wealth; so he said to his companion, while he disputed with him: I have greater wealth than you, and am mightier in followers.

  41. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, "I deem not that this will ever perish,

[ PICKTHAL ] And he went into his garden, while he (thus) wronged himself. He said: I think not that all this will ever perish.

[ SHAKIR ] And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said: I do not think that this will ever perish

  42. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] "Nor do I deem that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) come: Even if I am brought back to my Lord, I shall surely find (there) something better in exchange."

[ PICKTHAL ] I think not that the Hour will ever come, and if indeed I am brought back unto my Lord I surely shall find better than this as a resort.

[ SHAKIR ] And I do not think the hour will come, and even if I am returned to my Lord I will most certainly find a returning place better than this.

  43. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] His companion said to him, in the course of the argument with him: "Dost thou deny Him Who created thee out of dust, then out of a sperm-drop, then fashioned thee into a man?

[ PICKTHAL ] His comrade, when he (thus) spake with him, exclaimed: Disbelievest thou in Him Who created thee of dust, then of a drop (of seed), and then fashioned thee a man?

[ SHAKIR ] His companion said to him while disputing with him: Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you from dust, then from a small seed, then He made you a perfect man?

  44. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] "But (I think) for my part that He is Allah, My Lord, and none shall I associate with my Lord.

[ PICKTHAL ] But He is Allah, my Lord, and I ascribe unto my Lord no partner.

[ SHAKIR ] But as for me, He, Allah, is my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with my Lord.

  45. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] "Why didst thou not, as thou wentest into thy garden, say: 'Allah's will (be done)! There is no power but with Allah!' If thou dost see me less than thee in wealth and sons,

[ PICKTHAL ] If only, when thou enteredst thy garden, thou hadst said: That which Allah willeth (will come to pass)! There is no strength save in Allah! Though thou seest me as less than thee in wealth and children,

[ SHAKIR ] And wherefore did you not say when you entered your garden: It is as Allah has pleased, there is no power save in Allah? If you consider me to be inferior to you in wealth and children,

  46. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] "It may be that my Lord will give me something better than thy garden, and that He will send on thy garden thunderbolts (by way of reckoning) from heaven, making it (but) slippery sand!-

[ PICKTHAL ] Yet it may be that my Lord will give me better than thy garden, and will send on it a bolt from heaven, and some morning it will be a smooth hillside,

[ SHAKIR ] Then maybe my Lord will give me what is better than your garden, and send on it a thunderbolt from heaven so that it shall become even ground without plant,

  47. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] "Or the water of the garden will run off underground so that thou wilt never be able to find it."

[ PICKTHAL ] Or some morning the water thereof will be lost in the earth so that thou canst not make search for it.

[ SHAKIR ] Or its waters should sink down into the ground so that you are unable to find it.

  48. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] So his fruits (and enjoyment) were encompassed (with ruin), and he remained twisting and turning his hands over what he had spent on his property, which had (now) tumbled to pieces to its very foundations, and he could only say, "Woe is me! Would I had never ascribed partners to my Lord and Cherisher!"

[ PICKTHAL ] And his fruit was beset (with destruction). Then began he to wring his hands for all that he had spent upon it, when (now) it was all ruined on its trellises, and to say: Would that I had ascribed no partner to my Lord!

[ SHAKIR ] And his wealth was destroyed; so he began to wring his hands for what he had spent on it, while it lay, having fallen down upon its roofs, and he said: Ah me! would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord.

  49. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] Nor had he numbers to help him against Allah, nor was he able to deliver himself.

[ PICKTHAL ] And he had no troop of men to help him as against Allah, nor could he save himself.

[ SHAKIR ] And he had no host to help him besides Allah nor could he defend himself.

  50. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) From Ayat: 32 to 44

[YOUSAF ALI] There, the (only) protection comes from Allah, the True One. He is the Best to reward, and the Best to give success.

[ PICKTHAL ] In this case is protection only from Allah, the True, He is Best for reward, and best for consequence.

[ SHAKIR ] Here is protection only Allah's, the True One; He is best in (the giving of) reward and best in requiting.

  51. Sura: 18 - al-Kahf (The Cave) Ayat: 46

[YOUSAF ALI] Wealth and sons are allurements of the life of this world: But the things that endure, good deeds, are best in the sight of thy Lord, as rewards, and best as (the foundation for) hopes.

[ PICKTHAL ] Wealth and children are an ornament of the life of the world. But the good deeds which endure are better in thy Lord's sight for reward, and better in respect of hope.

[ SHAKIR ] Wealth and children are an adornment of the life of this world; and the ever-abiding, the good works, are better with your Lord in reward and better in expectation.

[YOUSAF ALI] (When this message was delivered), (Pharaoh) said: "Who, then, O Moses, is the Lord of you two?"

[ PICKTHAL ] (Pharaoh) said: Who then is the Lord of you twain, O Moses?

[ SHAKIR ] (Firon) said: And who is your Lord, O Musa?

  53. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 45 to 46

[YOUSAF ALI] How many populations have We destroyed, which were given to wrong-doing? They tumbled down on their roofs. And how many wells are lying idle and neglected, and castles lofty and well-built?

[ PICKTHAL ] How many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lieth (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower!

[ SHAKIR ] So how many a town did We destroy while it was unjust, so it was fallen down upon its roofs, and (how many a) deserted well and palace raised high.

  54. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) From Ayat: 45 to 46

[YOUSAF ALI] Do they not travel through the land, so that their hearts (and minds) may thus learn wisdom and their ears may thus learn to hear? Truly it is not their eyes that are blind, but their hearts which are in their breasts.

[ PICKTHAL ] Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind.

[ SHAKIR ] Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

  55. Sura: 22 - al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) Ayat: 48

[YOUSAF ALI] And to how many populations did I give respite, which were given to wrong-doing? in the end I punished them. To me is the destination (of all).

[ PICKTHAL ] And how many a township did I suffer long though it was sinful! Then I grasped it. Unto Me is the return.

[ SHAKIR ] And how many a town to which I gave respite while it was unjust, then I overtook it, and to Me is the return.

  56. Sura: 25 - al-Furqaan (The Criterion) From Ayat: 35 to 39

    [YOUSAF ALI] (Before this,) We sent Moses The Book, and appointed his brother Aaron with him as minister;

[YOUSAF ALI] And We command: "Go ye both, to the people who have rejected our Signs:" And those (people) We destroyed with utter destruction.

[ PICKTHAL ] Then We said: Go together unto the folk who have denied Our revelations. Then We destroyed them, a complete destruction.

[ SHAKIR ] Then We said: Go you both to the people who rejected Our communications; so We destroyed them with utter destruction.

[YOUSAF ALI] As also 'Ad and Thamud, and the Companions of the Rass, and many a generation between them.

[YOUSAF ALI] To each one We set forth Parables and examples; and each one We broke to utter annihilation (for their sins).

[YOUSAF ALI] And the (Unbelievers) must indeed have passed by the town on which was rained a shower of evil: did they not then see it (with their own eyes)? But they fear not the Resurrection.

[ PICKTHAL ] And indeed they have passed by the township whereon was rained the fatal rain. Can it be that they have not seen it? Nay, but they hope for no resurrection.

[ PICKTHAL ] See, yonder are their dwellings empty and in ruins because they did wrong. Lo! herein is indeed a portent for a people who have knowledge.

[ SHAKIR ] So those are their houses fallen down because they were unjust, most surely there is a sign in this for a people who know.

[ SHAKIR ] And Firon said: O chiefs! I do not know of any god for you besides myself; therefore kindle a fire for me, O Haman, for brick, then prepare for me a lofty building so that I may obtain knowledge of Musa's god, and most surely I think him to be one of the liars.
